Sounds a lot of travelling but only just over 1,000 miles with only a couple of big drives. Not that long now
hi
and it seems like quite a few people like travelling via cars,!
It's not something i have considered too much but it seems like a good idea! i like the idea of the long drives, straight roads, not much traffic but its the bit cities, lots of traffic that sorta worries me in the usa!!
good luck with the trip:T0 -
Thanks photome. I didn't realise you could do that.0

I have hired cars before in Florida with no problem, but the usa is recommended to have an International Driving Permit (IDP).
Does Alamo in Las Vegas require one of these?0 -

I think they are only required if your licence is not in English, I have never been asked for one anywhere in the US, so far. I have also never been asked for that stupid DVLA number you now allegedly have to have to present when you pick up your car.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -
I think what stuie is doing is checking in online but then there is another stage to do online to be able to skip the counter
I think that's right - I remember I was confused the first time I ws using them as I had checked in online, but was surprised that the confirmation mentioned stopping at the counter/kiosk...and you guys helped me figure out that there was one more step to be able to skip that part.
Their cars are much newer than the Dollar cars I have had recently, too.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -
Has anyone been to Roos'n'more, and if so was it after it reopened. I'm thinking about doing a VIP meet and greet, the sloth one. Anyone think it's a bit cruel, or are the animals quite happy? I did think about the monkey one but have been up close to monkeys in Gilbraltar, and also fed them in Jaipur so the sloth one would be a bit different. I'm slightly worried I'll be scared of it though lol.
We have been twice, both times before they closed. We really enjoyed it and I don't think it's cruel, the animals seem quite happy and the volunteers obviously love them. The one exception was a fennec fox they had on our second visit. He had been rescued from some roadside attraction and the little guy was obviously scared at the people (including me) who were leaning over to pet him - I felt badly about it after, if I had realised before I wouldn't have done it...I would like to have seen him kept away from the public for awhile, until he had learned that he had a lot more freedom to move around than he had before.
We loved the otter experience, but we got very lucky - they looooooved my hubby...spent much of the session running in and out of his shirt to dry off.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -
Yes, that's a fabulous trip.
If the Tioga Pass is closed for the winter (roughly November to May or June) then you have to take the far less scenic route via Bakersfield, or the much longer route via Lake Tahoe.
Be sure to give Yosemite at least one full day (two nights), more if possible. It's one of the most beautiful places on Earth and there's a lot to see, spread over a large area. Shortchanging Yosemite is the most common regret people have after a trip like this.

I agree with this. We went to Yosemite 5 years ago. It's easily one of the most beautiful places in the world. We spent 3 nights there, and spent the days ambling round (tried to walk up to the top of Upper Falls, but failed miserably, got as far as Columbia Rock and had to come back down) and we did a tour around the park. I also recommend the star gazing tour at Glacier Point, which is amazing.
We went in June and Tioga pass was closed, due to approx. 27 feet of snow and 2 snow ploughs, one at each end, attempting to meet in the middle. We did the Bakersfield route, and while driving out of the Park, we spent 3 days looking for a black bear, and failing, only for one to run out into the road in front of us. One of the fun parts of that road trip is, going past all the farmers fields and looking at the signs of the produce grown. Plenty of oranges, grapes, nectarines fields on the way. Plenty of massive ranches in the middle of nowhere as well. It's brilliant. I'd love to do it again one day.BEST EVER WINS WON IN ORDER (so far) = Sony Camcorder, 32" lcd telly, micro ipod hifi, Ipod Nano, Playstation 3, Andrex Jackpup, Holiday to USA, nintendo wii, Liverpool vs Everton tickets, £250 Reward Your thirst, £500 Pepsi, p&o rotterdam trip, perfume hamper, Dr Who stamp set, steam cleaner.

it was in LA last year with Alamo who said despite doing online check-in and getting the print out, was told still needed to go via the Kiosk machine so it take a swipe of my CC card...
Same applied in Vegas this year, but then again, I just assumed I had to goto the kiosk machine despite doing online checkin for Alamo....
Learn something new everyday !
Although, I do remember my insider account saying skip the kiosk when doing online check-in, but it was only in LA they said I needed the print out from the kiosk machine.... will try skipping kiosk next year
Although, I think reason I had to goto kiosk maybe, is I never book direct with Alamo, I go via a broker0
