Hey, SlowlyFading — at least you're not down like I am! I will be in a better position next month as we've had a pretty frugal January but this takes time to filter down because of when the credit card becomes payable.

I've opened a TSB monthly saver today and funded £250, another £250 to go over on Monday, with a standing order to go over after pay day each month. The money moved over so far is just rejigging of the whereabouts of particular balances, but hey - I might as well move every penny to maximise interest as soon as possible.

My TSB current account switch goes through on 8th Feb (so much for 7 day switching!) and will be boosted by a £100 bonus too. I'm confident for the year ahead.

THANK YOU for maintaining this thread!

  • I've updated the form and I am declaring £1,500 for January, this is lower than I planned however a close friend was badly hit by the floods over the xmas holidays and I lent some cash to help them replace some things while they wait for the insurance company payout so I know it will be paid back at some point.

    Onwards and upwards into February..................

Can I please be put down for £484 in January :(

This would have been a great month if I didn't have to pay out my 6 monthly service charge this month (£290) I could have actually saved £774 out of my £500 target.

My new frugality must be working I guess :T

Looking forward to seeing what I can do in February.

I've just submitted my end of month total. A whopping £2782.98/£28000!!:j

I feel like I'm cheating a little bit as some of this is employers pension contributions, but DH & I are counting down to retirement so it feels good to actually include all contributions to the 'pot'.

I'm not sure Feb will be so good, but I am on a mission.....

Do people include pension contributions in their savings figures? I guess logically they should be included but for the purposes of this challenge I am taking our net salaries as our monthly income figure (plus any other income or interest we get) and not including pension contributions.

There's no set rules, everyone's savings goals are individual so what they count as savings will depend on what they are saving for. If you're saving for retirement then it makes sense to include pension contributions, if you're not then it doesn't make sense to include it.

I'm saving for a house deposit as that is my main saving goal so for the purposes of this challenge I only count money that is going towards that and not my emergency/rainy day fund or pension contributions.

Don't be disheartened. These things happen and you have identified why you didn't save anything - because you were paying off your credit card (which is a POSITIVE thing as you are now starting with a clean slate and not in debt.

Onwards and upwards, we'll get there!

I would say go (unless you have debts). You've got the rest of your life to save money, this might be an unrepeatable experience which will give you memories and bonds friendship for the rest of your life.

I look back on things I didn't do, as I felt I needed to stick to my strict savings budget, and feel sad I can never do them now, because people have died, moved on etc. :(

It's important to look after the future, but not at the expense of the present (Wentthedaywell's word of wisdom for the day :D ).
