I know this sounds like a stupid question...

Is it a fair understanding that with it being a 'flexible tariff' with Octopus, that from September 26th we'll get charged the Flexible Octopus September 2021 v1 tariff, and from October 1st, we'll get charged the Flexible Octopus October 2021 v2 tariff.  Would anyone get the Flexible Octopus October 2021 v1 tariff, even if you signed up a few weeks ago?
Since Octopus have not actually formally announced the tariff that they have agreed with Ofgem I would say you still have to wait to be certain, but I suspect it will be the V2 tariff since they have said from the start that your tariff would be £10 below the cap which the V2 tariff is, but the V1 tariff is more than £10 below.

Yes, until such time as they give 30 days notice of  a change to Flexible Octopus October 2021 v1 tariff rates which might/might not happen this side of March/April

What Octopus are not doing is offering their variable capped tariff to new customers (those not part of the SoLR process) at the point when they get a quote. They just offer two 2 year fixed options.
They seem to making certain tariffs 'popular' by offering only the fixes to people using the quote button.
If you want a different tariff, you can apparently email them to ask for it.

To date, Octopus has always allowed existing customers to request a move to another current tariff, so yes, someone joining on one of the fixed tariffs offered to new customers could request a change as soon as their switch is completed.

It will be interesting to see if any of that flexibility changes in the current climate.

In an earlier post, QrizB, I think, applied to switch to Octopus a few weeks ago and has now got the Flexible October v1 tariff. [edit] See post https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/78639494/#Comment_78639494

ok thanks.  will see what happens... having spent the last several years being on fixed tariffs, I would have expected that flexible tariffs (SVR) operate differently and change when necessary (with 30 days notice)  i.e. that we're signing / being moved onto the Flexible Octopus tariff, and for e.g. May, you would be on the FO May 2021 tariff, then from July, the FO July 2021 tariff, then from September the FO September 2021 tariff, then from October the FO October 2021 tariff (not sure how the v1 and v2 work)

Scratch that comment - looking back it looks like everyone from October 2018 - April 2021 now have the same tariff, so I guess they are separate tariffs

I think the v2 will be a special tariff for former Avro customers only.

You won't see complaints from existing customers as they are either on a cheaper fix already or as their fixes end they will be able to go on to the same variable tariff as the Avro transfers, if that makes more sense for them than other options like Go/Go Faster/Intelligent.

@MWT when a fix ends and the customer is moved to a variable tariff must they always be moved to the capped variable tariff?
if yes is this also a type of 'deemed contract'?
  • is this also a type of 'deemed contract'?
With regard to Octopus taking over Avro customers' supply, yes it will be a deemed contract.
"Deemed Contract" a Contract formed between you and us in the circumstances set out in clause 4.

    4. Deemed Contract

4.1 Means a contract between us and you which is deemed to have been formed because we supply Energy to a property of which you are the owner or occupier, when you have not actively agreed to that supply by us.
