  • One and the same tariff for new and existing customers respectively?  Or two different tariffs masquerading under the same name? Or one for search engine purposes and one for direct contacts, each with the same label? Sorry if this sounds a bit cynical - it is!

Who knows? I was quoted the same tariff as a potential "new" customer at a different address on the same road as an actual one, so it does look like one tariff regardless. But they are still reasonably competitive in my case, so worth sticking with - once you understand how they operate and keep an eye on your consumption and billing!
The tariff I took has now been replaced by another with exactly the same rates for the address, but maybe the rates have changed for other regions.

  • I'd be interested in knowing your conclusions since I have not ruled out completely switching over myself - but with reservations based on what other posts have reported.

One account I manage I've left with them, as they're still competitive enough, and switching away involves giving me permission to manage the account with the new supplier. Another I switched away to EDF a year or so back because the annual cost worked out to within a few pence of staying with Avro, and there was a fair bit of unreset about Avro's ability to continue being a supplier at the time.
Didn't want my eggs all in one basket as they say!

That raises an interesting point because if you have been with them for more than a year then they might have reasonably accurate annual consumption figures if you've submitted readings. Whether they will use those figures is another matter, of course.

It may have escaped a few customers attention but the estimated annual consumption for gas Avro show on each bill never gets recalculated or updated and always shows the same quantity every month whereas the estimated annual consumption for electricity Avro show on each bill is recalculated and updated every month.

My guess would be that the complicated calculation for calorific value is well beyond the capabilities of their system and staff.

.. and I would say, the majority of their paying customers as well (!). I once worked out the gross conversation factor myself "blindly".
I think I have got to the point with Octopus where I get billed and pay for my actual consumption rather than using sky-gazing estimates, and am beginning to appreciate what a hidden benefit this is.

Offering existing customers only one new tariff, for whatever reason, is a new policy after the recent upgrade of their website.
Previously there were a handful offered and you could choose the date you wanted the renewal to commence,
up to 45 days before the end of your existing contract.
When the time comes, I`ll compare on CAB and take it from there, be it Avro or otherwise.

That's the way I see it too. At the rate tariffs are presently coming and going, that won't be until about 3 weeks before the end of my existing contract.

I see that two of Avro's fairly close competitors have gone to the wall today. Avro is still in the game though.
