Not just this thread affected, either. Here's another MSE forum EMAIL NOTIFICATION just received. It also has a crucial dot missing. Can you spot where it should be?

Why on earth did MSE abandon a very competent piece of software for this rubbish system?
Smodlet and I can both read and comprehend, but we both obviously did the same thing, namely, clicked on the "Check it out" button in the email notification we received to take us to the original comment posted on here, and then clicked on the posted link which has no full-stop missing between the "co" and the "uk" so took us straight away to the information the poster (avinalarrrf) referenced.  If you want to complain about MSE's email notifications corrupting the posted links, i.e. removing the full-stop between the "co" and the "uk", I suggest you send them a direct message, instead of clogging up a discussion thread titled "Avro Energy Reviews" with your irritation about various IT issues, as you see them, which is particularly ironic when you rudely tell other posters that their comments are "totally irrelevant" and suggest they remove them.
Ah, so it was you that tried to "no platform" me.
I don't much care for you calling me rude - but I'd not try to censor you.

I have no idea what you're talking about and I have no idea what "no platform" means.  I didn't even report your comment since I think rude people are best ignored, but I did notice just now that your comment had been removed and assumed it had been done by the moderator.
Obviously, I don't expect an apology for your rudeness or your incorrect assumption that I'd "no platform"d you - whatever that means!

Avro whd for the Broader group open today, if anyone is interested.
Spotted it late last night and applied immediately. Successfully applied mid-Jan for last winter's so should be the same this time.
  • Re the Smart meter upgrade promise :-(
All was going ok until I had a pre-visit call from the installers.... when they asked what my current meters were (already disclosed to Avro!) and I told them, they cancelled the install and referred me to Avro.

    Avro’s response:
“Unfortunately as you have the 1st generation Smart Meter, the meter loses it Smart functionality upon switching. We are currently awaiting updates from the Smart meter regulator, which will allow ourselves and any other supplier to read your meter remotely. We are hopeful these updates will be completed by Summer 2021.
Due to the quickly approaching update we are now unable to now exchange the SMETS1 for a SMETS2 as per Government Regulations.
We did not cancel this but Lowri Beck have informed us they are now unable to complete the suggested.”
So back to square one, all upgrade hopes dashed again!

Thanks for the update Mike;....well, that’s my hopes dashed as well !

I haven’t been keeping myself up to speed recently with regard to the SMETS2 roll-out (or should that be trickle-out!) but I can’t believe they’re still wittering on about upgrading old BG SMETS1 meters to SMETS2,...I really thought that idea had been kicked into the long grass ages ago,...but apparently not.

Quote...”Due to the quickly approaching update we are now unable to now exchange the SMETS1 for a SMETS2... We are hopeful these updates will be completed by Summer 2021....”

....completed by summer, eh?...how many times have we heard that over the years!

Just as an aside,...does anyone actually have an old SMETS1 meter (from any supplier) that’s been successfully upgraded to a SMETS2 ?

I'm sorry but I actually derive satisfaction from reading my meters myself.  If you do it regularly, you can notice aberrations quickly and question your usage/your meter(s)' efficacy.  I like working out my usage and how much it cost because it makes me feel in control.

I really don't understand the impulse to abdicate this in favour of apps; they give me the willies, not that I have the gadgetry to acquire them anyway but would not for all the tea in China... Or anything else that comes from there.
  • My thoughts entirely. On the one hand anything that is foistered on us by "the system" has got to come with a govt health warning from the outset. On the other I would be very reluctant to rely on a hi-tec gismo getting it right without my cross-checking, which rather defeats the objective in the first place. Finally I have read so many sob stories of folks' problems with smart meters, particularly when changing supplier and / or when disputing readings, that when they are suggested I reach for the barge pole.  I think that there is at least one supplier, forget which one off hand, that insists on smart meters being installed as part of their deal. No thanks.

I got into the habit a few years ago when contributing regular meter readings to an Oxford University research project into climate change. I just carried on taking my readings when the project ended.
If you want to add some interest to your readings you can download regular <Heating Degree-Day data> which tells you how cold it has been on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. You just need to pick a weather station near your location which will be close to your local "climate".
    Edit
Apologies for this post being a bit off-topic.

Avro aren't pressing me to take up a smart meter - and I can live with that.  As Smodlet writes, reading a meter yourself is the most reliable way of monitoring your consumption.  As for green credentials, not manufacturing, fitting and maintaining a more complex metering system seems to be the greenest approach.
I was amused to follow up Avro's link to Smart Meters at the bottom of:

Didn`t Avro get into trouble from Ofgem for refusing to offer smart meters.
I think at one point they were barred from taking on new customers until they did so.
  • Why did they Ofgem pick on Avro when the majority (??) of suppliers don't insist on smarties with their dodgy reputation?
