To me either one is fine as long as it's romantic/unique.
If they're just called out into a football field and he gets down on 1 knee then that's pretty rubbish.
Similarly, just lighting some candles at home and turning on Andrea Bocelli isn't much either.

    Nice public: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRRuQ5cM45o&t=2m31s
Nice private: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5i3ldqt9FCU (granted the setup is pretty bland like the home ones I mentioned but at least he made the trouble to surprise her at work and remembered something from their very first date...and in true MSE fashion she wants to return the champagne)

My proposal will eventually be private but maybe recorded for YouTube

Weddings are for the bride to say "look at me!"...public proposals are for the guy to say "look at me!" or embarrass her
    Sorry.
I didn't think your 'nice public' was actually nice at all.

I - speaking personally - would have curled up in embarrassment & said 'NO' because the person proposing would have completly misunderstood me.

Assuming it was someone I wanted to marry, I would not mind a public proposal, or a private one.

I would not appreciate a public one if I was going to turn him down!¬

And no way at someone else's celebration.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

Then the more commonly shared nice public video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnVAE91E7kM - although the video was way too long and should have ended when the dad was revealed & gone straight to the proposal

Also, it's easy to say you'd say no on the forums now but if you fell in love with a musician chances are you'd just get swept away in the moment (probably given him a dead arm afterwards for the embarrassment caused)

A person is going to say yes/no regardless of the situation. At least a creative proposal leads to a cheap, happy memory unlike some crazy woman demanding 300 people she barely knows to attend a lavish wedding

I must be getting old - videoing something like this just seems in really bad taste, particularly when you then post it on Youtube.

I'm not a fan of public proposals and would have hated one for myself, but this one always gets me choked up :o

But why do all the women look so surprised?

I feel it is a bit old fashioned. Don't young couples plan their futures and talk about living together, marriage and babies without one having to make a declaration? That's how it seems to be with my kids and their friends.

I can't decide which is worse, being howled at by some nutter who can't sing or having to set up the "romantic" surprise setting for someone to propose to me. Romance truly is dead.

Thinking about it the worst example of the "romantic" proposal I have heard of is a young woman who told her boyfriend which ring he was to buy to surprise her with, told him when she wanted the proposal and where (it was public). Everyone was laughing their heads of at them.

It's capturing a moment. Do people not make wedding videos? I think sex tapes are a bit worse taste than a proposal video but everyone seems to do them still.
    Why record for YouTube?
To show how awesome & creative I am of course. Didn't you see the comment about proposal's being the guy's "look at me" moment? :P You can also edit in music etc to make it epic.

But a few rose petals in the living room then down on 1 knee is true romance -_
