I wouldn't have minded if it was in public but at someone else'e occasion is bad form IMO.
  • My wife wanted a proposal without fuss, without her family and friends knowing before hand, without pomp and fuss.. She was very happy when I took her away for a weekend and proposed on our room balcony overlooking lovely scenery.

I had been aiming on proposing whilst we were on a park bench on a lovely path in the park - but they were all full of tramps and I couldn't!

A few weeks later she found out that i'd told her brother, and all his friends that I was planning to propose while I was on a stag night.. good job they kept the secret! :)

I've just seen someone get proposed to on stage in front of 25,000 people. It was truly cringeworthy. The whole crowd were shouting 'no, don't do it!'

I would hate it, it's supposed to be a special moment between two people, not a publicity stunt! I think it cheapens it, and to do it at someone else's party is rude and embarrassing.

At my friends wedding one of the guests asked the DJ to announce that she'd just got engaged to her boyfriend, and it wasn't even true. The other guests were not impressed; you could almost hear the gasps of horror!

How did she know you were going to propose as that suggests you had already agreed?
Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

Absolutely agree with the 2 posts above.
And - even worse - somebody proposing on Jeremy Kyle after passing the lie detector test. smiley-rolleyes010.gif

    I thought the same.
If ringo_24601 knew what sort of proposal she wanted, it must have been the subect of a discussion at some time earlier.

Surely most couples who are that close have discussed at least, the notion of getting married?
I must say some here are truly hideously judgemental about "class" etc as well!
I'll admit, I wasn't initially thrilled with the idea of SIL to be doing the surprise public proposal but I'm really excited now!
I kne he would something like this anyway, he is a director after all and I thnk she is going to be utterly thrilled! I half expected him to organise a flash mob! I know marriage has been spoken about and he did ask "permission" a few months ago so only the time and lplace will be a surprise!
Even a hardened old sceptic like me is melting a little now!

My now ex husband proposed to me on stage in front of about 300 people.....it made it oh so special and meant everyone else could be involved (we had about 25 family members in the audience). It was as if he was publicly declaring his love for me rather than it being a secret.

Weirdly, I am usually one who prefers to be in the background and hate being the center of attention but it really was very special.

    That's why we have weddings.:)

To me either one is fine as long as it's romantic/unique.
If they're just called out into a football field and he gets down on 1 knee then that's pretty rubbish.
Similarly, just lighting some candles at home and turning on Andrea Bocelli isn't much either.

    Nice public: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRRuQ5cM45o&t=2m31s
Nice private: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5i3ldqt9FCU (granted the setup is pretty bland like the home ones I mentioned but at least he made the trouble to surprise her at work and remembered something from their very first date...and in true MSE fashion she wants to return the champagne)

My proposal will eventually be private but maybe recorded for YouTube

Weddings are for the bride to say "look at me!"...public proposals are for the guy to say "look at me!" or embarrass her

They might be romantic but there's certainly no reason for them to be unique. Most people will remember very fondly the moment they decided to get married, even if it was just one turning to the other and saying "Let's get married".

All this showing off and making a fuss is unnecessary and in no way represents a person's feelings - just their desire to be centre stage which, in itself, is a very poor reason for saying "Yes".
