Mobile Roaming: Cheapest Calls When You're Abroad
Comments
-
I used to use Voipduniya (nindino.com) for thier callback service. You dial thier number, they then hangup and call you back.
The great thing about this was that you didn't need any credit on the phone you're dialling from.
But it's stopped working.
I've looked for other providers via googling "callback voip" and similar but call-through providers come up instead - this is where you use an access number to dial.
Anyone know any alternative providers?Order of events: Banks lose our money -> get bailed out -> were inflating GBP to cover it -> now taxing us -> next will grab your funds direct -> things get really desperate to balance the books. What should have happened?: banks go bust and we lost our money much quicker0 -
Simple and cheap data roaming... The only country this can be done in is Cloud Cuckoo Land
Abroadband.com do a pretty simple and easy to use service for E0.59 anywhere in the world.
Sims2go are also currently adding data to their excellent roaming product, which is the solution I'm hoping to go with when they release their pricing.0 -
Abroadband - 0.59 Euros per MB or per day? All right I know the answer, per MB!!
Not possible to have a Windows machine connected to such a service, unless you are v. techy and know how to switch off all the background/Windows updaters off so as to prevent the 'accidental' odd 50MB being downloaded!0 -

Yes, 0.59/MB of course, so not cheap, but still the cheapest and easiest around I think.
Although, if anyone knows of one better, I'd be delighted to hear about it.0 -
Easy and could have been OK but for Windows uncontrollable data appetite. Might suit an iPad though - or if they only bundled roaming CALLS with it, could be used nicely in a smartphone on that European trip.0

This new company is €6 per day for up to 150MB in Europe:

You swap the sim over. They provide micro sims. €33.90 for the sim.
I have not used, so can't vouch for themkoru0 -
Companies like Vectone, Lyca and Lebara have operations in several other European countries. The websites for those countries are available in English and as far as I can tell you can order a free local Sim to be delivered to you in the UK. Their rates are pretty low.
For Vectone Austria, you top up a minimum of €10 and this gets you a free data allowance of 300 MB for the next month. Voice calls within the country are five cents per minute.

The deal in Sweden seems similar, although it is in kroner.

They also operate in the Netherlands, but they don't seem to have any rates for data:

6 Euros - about £5 - per day could even be useful for UK use, never mind going abroad. Wonder what the credit topup/expiry situation is.0 -

What I'm doing to save a small fortune on roaming charges is...
Like so many people now, I have a smart phone, with WiFi, on which you can install apps... so...
I've installed a VOIP app on my phone (skype), and will use the free WiFi where ever I'm staying to place calls instead!! This will cost an insignificant few pence a minute, rather than the ~40P EU or ~£1 US, or ~£1.50 to £2.00 rest of world you otherwise would pay!
The only downside of this is that if you are expecting to recieve a call, you have to arrange a time for the call, so you can be in WiFi hotspot range...0
