Mobile Roaming: Cheapest Calls When You're Abroad

  • Another confused person. I travel frequently to Germany - I want to be able to call my boyfriend who lives in Germany on his UK mobile, both from the UK and in Germany. Am I right in thinking this doesn't cost extra?

I also want to be able to call a UK landline occasionally from Germany - am completely lost as to the cheapest way of doing this?

Finally I also occasionally want to use the internet on my phone while in germany - seeing as this isn't for much, am I right in thinking O2 Web Daily Europe (I am O2 pay monthly) would be the easiest way to do this and not extortionate?

Am currently trying to recover from my last mobile phone bill!

You are wrong. If you both are abroad you both pay roaming prices for making and receiving calls. One pays from calling from Germany to UK. The other pays for receiving a call in Germany.
    Only incoming texts are free.

It possibly is the easiest way if you don't use more than 15Mb per day.

It might be worth you both having German SIM cards as well.

It would cost 3 or 5 or 9 cents a minute to call each other, depending on which network you choose, and there are add-on bundles of plenty of data for a month from €5 or so.

Install Skype - takes 1 minute and is a free app. Use that on the WiFi to call UK for a few pence per minute. Receiving texts might be OK on T-Mob roaming, so if you kids want to talk they text you and you call back on Skype. In US, WiFI is also available at countless places.

For just 4 days, no point buying a local prepaid sim. As suggested, just use the hotal WiFi with Skype on your phone.

You can call mobiles/landlines with skype. You just need to add some credit. If not, then just walk into a tmobile/AT&T store, walmart, target, etc. and get a cheap phone/sim combination, add some credit and that's it!

The iPhone is unlikely to be unlocked so a local SIM may not work, plus beware iPhone 4 & 4s take a cut-down SIM card (not every corner kiosk will have these).

I had been using a betamax clone (megavoip) for calling a Isle of Man mobile number (+4477000) but suddelny last week betamax barred calling Isle of Man mobiles! "sorry nothing we can do about it" their response! they barred +4477000 from all betamax/dellmont clones platforms..

do you know any other cheap voip alterantive for this destination?
