Why?
Well, why risk the (almost inevitable) problems with importing a phone from China?
Why look at Motorolla etc. which - good though they may be at their price - are too expensive to be truly classed as "budget"?
Scrounger was on the right lines, with his recommend of the Vodafone Smart First 6.
I see earlier in the thread the Microsoft Lumia 635; a pretty good phone tbh, 4G too and available sim-free from about £80 if you hunt for it.
Let's be honest though; if your budget is (say) £50 to £80 you are not going to get an all-singing, all-dancing super-fast latest-tech Apple-munching mobile; you will have to compromise.
With that in mind, a really good budget alternative is the Microsoft Lumia 435.
£40 (plus £10 top-up) at B]Carphone Warehouse[/B] and comes sim-free.

Yes, it has a poor camera and no 4G but it is nonetheless very capable and has a micro-sd memory slot.
PLUS it will soon be running the very latest operating system (Windows10).
Now that is a bargain budget phone, IMHO.
:money:
Only £4.99 with a suitable PAYG SIM as an 'upgrade'.0 -
I am looking to change my phone at the moment I had been looking at a couple. Samsung A3 but yesterday I was in Carphone warehouse and I was told that this phone is over 2 years old. He was recommending the Samsung J5.
My Phone contract is with o2 and I would continue to use them. I was offered a package of 300 mins unlimited texts and 300 MG. Cost £17 50 monthly. The phone to buy.is £159.
When I look on o2 web site this phone is not available. When I google it several names come up but it is all back to Carphonewarehouse. I am wondering if this phone is only supplied to them?
If this is the case then is it a good idea to buy it. I would appreciate advice.
I only have some photo's and phone no's on my phone and old texts and emails I do not use gaming or have any music on it.
He tells me it will cost £15 to move it to the new phone. He then tells me that if I buy their insurance at £25 they will do the job as part of the purchase. He told me too that I will get a voucher for £50 if I buy it from them. This shop is based within Curry/PC World but states that this offer is not in the Carphonewarehouse in Town or with o2.
I do not drive and this shop is at a retail park which is a bus ride away followed by a 10 min walk.
He did not have the phone in stock in the colour I preferred but said they could get it for me in 24 hrs. Again could I ask about colour Available in Black White or Gold?
Currently I have the Nokia 520 which is windows I have 200 mins 1MB and unlimited texts. I have never gone over or near to my allowances.
I would appreciate advice also is it better to buy from o2 so that if I have a problem I can go into their shop in town.
Sorry so many questions ! Sue0 -

Voucher for what? What conditions are attached to the voucher?
300MB is a lot less than your current 1 GB. But how much are you paying currently?0 -
NiftyDigits wrote: »Not really. Better to maintain a PAYG SIM, then to get a PAYG upgrade. That way a much more reasonable £40.
Immaterial of how you choose to buy it (and a PAYG upgrade obviously makes it cheaper if you can do it that way) I was simply pointing out that IMHO, getting a a fairly cheap but reasonable for the price phone like a Moto E is a safer option than importing a phone from China, especially if you are on a tight budget?0 -
Whats everyone's opinion on this phone:

Matter of opinion. I wouldn't pay £80 for a Moto G, but if a Chinese Smartphone with far superior specification, good reviews and firmware support was offered at the same price, you pays yer money and yer takes yer choice.0 -

Review looks a bit scathing, especially saying it gets hot.
The thing is i can understand some peoples angles with phones coming from china regardless of where you buy them, but i just thought about that further.
The rich western manufacturers place strict and stringent guidelines and processes.
The Chinese knocking out their own products on the other hand and flogging them abroad may very well skimp on build quality which is obviously reflected in the price but for me personally the idea of importing a cheap smartphone having read many times about the issues you can have is bonkers when you can get a hot bit of kit like a moto g.
Honestly, it is better than the first iphone i ever had (which froze even though it was brand new lol) and i think that iphone cost me £400
For £139 i am over the moon with it and really feel as though i have save best part of 200 quid by not jumping in with the apple fan boy crowd again.
I would try and raise your budget, there is money saving and then there is hardcore skimping for little gain and potential frustration.0 -
