I and my OH want to go to NYC in October half term (last week in Oct) for 3 or 4 nights. Is it best to look now for flights or nearer the time?

Flights WILL get more expensive the closer you get to the date of depature for any sort of school holiday. If they look reasonable enough now, get them booked, that way you wont end up disappointed if they go up/sell out.

None of them look very reasonable, however I have noticed that some of the threads on here state that the major airlines can be cheaper if booked 3 months or less before departure.

There are at least 15 flights per day from Heathrow to New York, many more if you include routings via Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta etc. They RARELY sell out fully, where you can't get a ticket for at least one of the flights / routings. I've been to NYC 10 times now, and I've never found where i can't get a flight at all on the days I want. (I fly from Manchester, so there are even less flights per day!)

Also, the airlines put bucket fares on, around 3 months before the date of departure, to sell more seats. These are normally restricted tickets, and non changeable non refundable fares.

Your quote my apply to charter flights to beach style holiday countries, but not New York flights.

Three months is my made up rule, and I'm fairly stubborn, and I stand by it. By telling someone to book a flight now, which might be at £400, is not moneysaving.
If someone is happy with that price, then yes, by all means book it. But if you want to see if you can get a cheaper price, then you have to play the waiting game. As soon as you see a price you like, BOOK IT.

I booked in Jan for a departure in March. I was getting to the stage of the prices wern't shifting, and I could get a return flight for £260. This was £10 more than I have paid before. So i waited. One day, Delta did some amazing deals, and I had a flight for £149.

Now, once the bucket fares are sold out, then prices do go back up in price. but sometimes, they never go back up to their pre 3 month price status.

Now the trick is, NEVER check prices again after you book. Then you always think you have a sweet deal!

  • Markymoo, have you even flown with Air India? I was looking for a one way flight from NYC back to London in August which they sell at roughly £213 pp at the moment. Sounds too good to be true?

    hi everyone,

i'm looking for a good deal on flights to New York on 15th May, returning 20th May preferably from Manchester. The best I can find at the moment is £357 with Delta. Does anyone know of any deals at the moment?

    Thanks in advance!!
