Brilliant thread and I have read and taken in as much as I can!

I am trying to book a suprise 18th birthday present for my daughter and boyfriend to New York over New year.
2 questions , is it too early to book for then now? also I have found return flights for £793 inc all the surcharges etc. is this a good price for then. They can go anytime from 26th Dec to 2nd Jan from any airport.looking for a stay of about 5ish nights. Their ages are 19 & 18 so things like transfers and getting to hotels would need to be relatively easy ( peace of mind for me!)

Any help at all would be much appreciated, thank you for reading :-)

    £793 each???

If that is for 2 people, hmm.. £400 for new year.... if they could go any day after the 5th Jan, you could probably get flights for £250 each! the costs of NYC are enormous, and standing in a cattle pen which is times square.. you're not allowed to leave when you're standing there in the bitter cold... doesn't sound that appealing..

also, at their age, they can't go sit in a bar to have fun with other people, and watch it on tv, in the warmth of that place...

as for getting to the hotel, simple, jump in a yellow cab.. not the cheapest, but the easiest...

Thanks for the quick reply. The £793 is for the 2 of them. The drinking they are not too worried about and unfortunately Jan 2nd is the latest they can leave for home.

I don't think the cold will worry these 2 either, they are pretty hardy lol.

When you say the costs of NYC are enormous are you just referring to the hotel and flights? or general tansport and meals?

I am a complete novice to this argghhh

Thanks a lot once again :-)

Well I'm back and had the BEST time! Enjoyed it so much more the 2nd time around, I think the warm weather helped, I am definitely a warm weather New Yorker goer, just walked so much more and got a feel for the place.

Definitely would recommend staying in Greenwich Village, so much better than staying near Times Square, where I stayed before. You can easily get to Times Square, but it was so nice coming out of the hotel in the morning and being with the locals and having a spot of brekkie or brunch. Bleecker Street, well OH wants to move to Greenwich Village now lol! Bars that sell English beer, bars full of live music and comedy clubs, fantastic!

Views from TOTR were much better than from Empire State Building, and you get to see the Empire State Building as well, funnily enough..... Went to Central Park twice, so lovely there, and restful, such a contrast thinking where you actually are. We didn't fork out for a horse and trap, very expensive, but when our feet could walk no more, we got one of those bike things, where a nice young man cycles you round the Park and the two of you sit in nice comfy seats.

OH sat through Sex and the City film with me, bless him, it had only opened that weekend in New York, and it was great seeing locations in the film we had only just walked down!

Did the free ferry to Staten Island to get great views of the Statue of Liberty, though the weather changed on the way back and there was thunder and lightening around it, very dramatic.

We were lucky with the weather overall, late 70's the whole time and glorious sunshine mainly.

I recommend a look round the New York Public Library, amazing building. We also had a lovely walk around Chinatown and Little Italy. South Street, Seaport, is worth a visit too, you can get Broadway show tickets from a booth there as well, and as said before on here, hardly any queues compared to the Times Square booth.

We weren't there for the shopping this time but did get ourselves a pair of Levi jeans each for £20, well it would have been rude not to. :D

OH wants to go back asap......he says he feels at home there.:D...oh and my biggest tip would be is to speak to the locals!!! Really friendly, especially the NY cops, had a few good convos with them, :rotfl: you get good tips, and it made us feel more at home. :D

Sorry to ramble, I heart New York. :D
