i can't find anything cheaper.... BA have just upped their fuel surcharge, so again prices will be going up in price..

there is nothing cheaper at all in august, until you hit the 25th Aug.... then the prices drop to £340 ish...

    M

thanks for replying, after maaaany hours of searching and deliberating, have decided to go from the 25aug -01sep instead to save money. On opodo, i managed to find a return flight for 292pp, to and from London's Gatwick (outbound: direct with Air France, inbound: changeover in detroit with Royal Dutch KLM, though operated by Northwest Airlines) So all in all, i'm very pleased...a 7nite stay in NY in a 4 star hotel (the New York Helmsley) for around 568pounds. All the inclusive quotes i found (for a quality hotel, in manhattan) where nothing less than 7-800. I just can't wait now! thanks again, for ur help

I finally found a link that tells us when the new limit is coming in:

    http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/politics/threelinewhip/jan08/misledondutyfree.htm

It will be 430 euros and will be introduced in December 2008.

As the article says, this is 4 years since Gordon Brown "announced" he was going to put the limit up to £1000. He wasn't allowed to do this by his bosses in Brussels. (What on earth they have got to do with how much stuff I can bring from the USA to the UK, I have absolutely no idea.)

a guide book can last many years, even in a huge city like new york, many things stay the same.. yes places can close and open, but the main attractions are the same...

i've got guidebooks from 2003, that i still use on a regular basis, so to say that you'll only use it once, is extremley narrow minded.

also, many other people have benefitted from my guide books, as i pass them onto friends, family, and even sold them on amazon/ebay...

many guidebooks are under £10... there is moneysaving, but there is plain awkwardess!!!

oh, and what if you want to plan, read up on things, months before you go.. and then you want to take it with you.. you'll have the book for say 3 months!!!

Then you join the library, tell them that you don't have to pay fees (I don't, but have never been asked for proof) ... and keep the book for three months! :p:p:p

I tend to borrow from the library to find the one I want (and peediedj, you don't just get books at libraries nowadays!), and then get the book of ebay. I particularly like the Rough Guides Directions range.

Have you not heard of the good old mobile library service? They'll come to your door, or you can go on to the van ... and if you're really nice to them (don't bend the spines on the books - I love it!) then they'll even make you a cup of tea and a biscuit! :p:p:p
