Hey all, i'm planning to go NY for my 21st (i can't wait!) and I've managed to book the New York Helmsley for 212pp for 6 nights (there's four of us in a two double beds room - every else will be 21). I know im working backwards - hotel first, then flights, but i thought that deal was too good to not book!

My dates are pref. from the 8-14/15th Aug and the cheapest direct flights i have found so far are by BA for 440 pounds return

I've read as much of the previous posts as poss - so judging by opinions, the best time to book is in June - as it's three months prev?

I just want to the get a great deal, so any help would be greatly appreaciated!! Thanx in advance, J.

ps. glad i've found this forum.

i can't find anything cheaper.... BA have just upped their fuel surcharge, so again prices will be going up in price..

there is nothing cheaper at all in august, until you hit the 25th Aug.... then the prices drop to £340 ish...

    Hi all

I'm in the process of booking my flight and hotel for NY. The cheapest flight I have found from LHR to JFK is £300. I'm not too flexible with the dates; I will have to depart on the 23rd May and arrive back on the 30th May. Is this price good??

Plus I am finding it hard to find a cheap 4 star hotel! (yes i see the contradiction!).

I am willing to spend up to £1400 for 7 nights on the hotel but the hotel has to be worth it. I want to be near places like 5th Avenue, Macy's etc. Which hotels can you recommend?

Currently I am being pulled towards the Grand Hyatt, but will it be a long walk to the attractions?

    aaarghhh help!!

ok... contradiction in terms is correct...

my points about hotels in NYC, is that YOU'RE RARELY IN THE ROOM.. why spend all that money, when all you're going to do there is go back, drop your shopping off, shower, change, and sleep.. that is it!

now, to be near 5th avenue, where the shops are, and Macy's is an impossibility, really it is... 5th ave at around 50th street, and macy's is on 7th and 34th street.. it is all walkable, but the subway is safe, clean, and quick, so you don't have to worry about that..

now.. you have say $2600 for 7 nights, on a hotel.. this works out to be $370 ish inc taxes for a hotel room.. now, most prices are displayed without tax... so $320 a night it is!!!

now, below your budget, I can find a 4* hotel, called the Bentley, ($2184 inc taxes for 7 nights!) which is 123/342 hotels in New York

I can also find the Cosmopolitan Hotel in tribeca, a 2* establishment, and number 71/342 for only $1561 for 7 nights!

I can also find the Dylan Hotel, on 41st Street (a great location, as you obviously don't want to get a bus, taxi or subway anywhere, and have to be in the middle of everything you want to see) for $2606.01 for the 7 nights (181/342), which is bang on budget

all prices are from https://www.hotelconxions.com all ratings out of 342 are from tripadvisor.com

so, if i thought about this, and wanted the BEST hotel... i'd be staying at the CHEAPEST, and one that isn't anywhere near, (albeit it 8 minutes away from macy's on the subway, and about 16 to 5th avenue) where you want to be!

    Yours Uncontradictingly

Don't know if this has been posted yet, but there are some good deals on flights from Opodo ... Gatwick to New York for £263.

    http://promos.opodo.co.uk/travel/flights/united_states/new_york/london_gatwick_apt/

Unfortunately, their current promotion of £20 off flights seems to have expired (they're still advertising it, but if you try and the evoucher 'spring' it says too many people have used it already).

Still, £263 for mid June isn't so bad.

  • ... but I'm not going until next September and already I'm pricing stuff up to give me a good, long lead in time to get the best bargains for next year! So thanks for all your tips and hints and links to budget hotels and what is and isn't a waste of money. By the time I actually get around to booking the US holiday (NY-Las Vegas-Washington) in 13 months time I'll be the savviest bod on the board!

Unlucky for me I have a balance disorder and vertigo and had a complete and utter freak-out-panic-attack-claustrophobic episode on a 5 hour flight from Crete a couple of years ago, so have to put the extra money into premium seats. I'm not allowed the extra leg room seats by emergency exits as I use a walking stick. But hey ho, at least I can save on hotels and internal flights.
