its not a bad flight... i've done it at least 4 times..... the immigration at PHL is second to none, the only issues are when you've rechecked you luggage, there could sometimes be a wait, to get back through security (any liquids, bye bye, so make sure they go in your luggage before you recheck!) and then you have to get a bus through to terminal F. that in itself is alright, (the bus), but when you get to F, you might be delayed (2 out of 4, 1 by 10 mins, the second by 3 hours, but it was bad weather), and then you land at LGA.. which by far is my favourite airport to land at in NYC...
Mainly because, it is so near to manhattan, and i got a taxi once, and was at my hotel (Cosmo) within 20 minutes, at a cost of around $30....
as for comparisons US - AA, umm.. its a difficult one, as i flew a different route... if you're flying from MAN with AA< you'll probably go Chicago first, which makes you journey a lot longer, not somethign i wanted ever to do..
now.. AA - US, generally, they are the same kinda service. however, recently i flew Delta, and i think their service on a TATL flight was better than US...
M
hope that helps..
Thanks Mark, never been tempted by the train then? Just a 3 hour layover and chance of delay is a bit much. I'd love to do the delta's but they're just too expensive at the mo.
I'd book the PHL-LGA anyway as they put the fair up by £3 but then maybe not use it, is this allowed?

Hello
I have been reading this thread & picked up some good advice!
Could anybody help me with some ideas for an itinerary that would be suitable for children as well - we will be taking our 7 and 4 year old with us & would like to show them some of the landmarks without them becoming too tired or bored!
We are going on a Christmas & New year cruise & arrive back into New York on 2nd Jan 09. We need to book a transfer from the cruise terminal to a hotel (yet to be found & decided on - but aiming for a centrally located & child friendly place - again any tips would be great!)
We are returning back to the UK on the evening of Tuesday 6th January - so will have Friday, Sat,Sun & Mon nights & days to fill. I would like to get things booked & organised as much as I can before we go or at least have an idea as to what we will be doing each day!
Can anyone point me in the right direction please who has maybe "done" New York with a young family!
thanks all
Lil

Thanks to Markymoo and Hammy for your advice. We are now booked in with Delta - Man to NY. Our BA flights were cancelled due to 'operational issues' and we were offered a refund.
Anyone have experience of flying with Delta?

We have never had small children in tow, but I can tell you New York is magical at this time of the year. It will still be buzzing from New Years Eve as people return to work. The Christmas lights will still be on and the Xmas Tree at the Rockafella centre is a must. I am sure you won't have any difficulty finding something that will amuse the children. No doubt someone will be along who can add their experiences. Although I have never been, we are already booked into Radio City Apartments for 6 days in the lead up to Christmas this year. They are really highly recc on www.tripadvisor.co.uk and are only minutes away from the cruise terminal although I think the checkin time is 3 ish you will be able to dump your baggage. They come complete with their own kitchenette and I think this would be advantageous if the children need a drink through the night or you fancy that late night coffee. It is right in the heart of Broadway so within walking distance of a lot of must do's. However, they are not cheap, but not much accommodation in New York is and most are RO with no tea/coffee facilites at all. Be sure to take warm clothes, it will be freezing at that time of year but you will just love it. Hope this helps. Sally0 -

No experience of delta, but a whole heap of research, (i'm wasting my life! ) I'd probably choose delta over BA anyway, if i had the choice.
Have a great time.0 -

i'm just relieved for you that you aren't going to be flying with ba at this time .....did the delta flights cost more ? if so you may have a claim against BA
as for US airlines everyone has differing opinions with no clear winner or loser ...perception can be a problem when comparing with european airlines ,even over silly things like having to pay for alcoholic drinks on US carriers in economy.
just think of all those BA cases stuck in the airport and enjoy0 -

yup.. i flew delta just a month ago, though from LGW, rather than MAN...
you should have direct flights, and they are very good at bringing the drinks round, so generally a good all round service..
negatives.. no AVOD, just a big overscreen tv...

Hammy,
Delta flights were £850 - about £300 more than BA.
We gor booked in with Delta at this price but the price doubled after we booked and colleagues we should have been travelling with are having to fly to Heathrow and go BA from there.

john xs: I wouldn't book tickets now for Hairspray as these are obtainable from the TKTS booth in NY at discounted rates. Hairspary has been running for some time now. On the other hand if you are only going for a short stay you might want to bookon line. You would have enough time to book on line and get tickets sent to your home address( if you can't collect). Shop around. Ticketmaster has been this cheapest for some shows that I have priced, but no good for me as I have left it too late! We are supposed to by going to NY on Moday with BA- yes I know............anyway my daughter really wants to see Wicked and these tickets are soooooooooo expensive. I should have taken some of this advice and booked months ago just never gave it a thought. Anyway Hairspray and Mama Mia if we can get tickets might help to alleviate some of the disappointment, oh and the Blue Man Group! Any suggestions from anyone at this late date on getting these tickets greatly appreciated.0
