We went from Dublin and they do the American customs this end there so it is so much better when you reach the other end

To be honest the luggage thing wouldn't bother me, but i am larger than your average bear, and the chances of me being able to get even a bra in a shop fairly easily is nil. It just takes some of the pressure off me, as I will worry all the way there ( and back).

While you are here... another question.

When we get to passport control in JFK, do my husband and I approach separately, or do we go up together?

( to put this in perspective last place we went to was Tenerife and we just wandered past and they didn't blink at us)

it's one of those countries where you should both approach together as the immigration questions are the same for the 2 of you....ultimately they're looking at whether you are going to abuse the visa waiver system. or have reason to refuse entry to the US

I am off to New York a week tomorrow. Cannot wait - first time out of Europe.

Is there any sort of checklists of things to do and see
    a) In New Yorks?
    and
    b) To get through customs?

I'm guessing looking at some posts that customs will be a very different experience to the likes of Italy and Spain where they don't really seem to care.

    Thanks.

A checklist? if youre off a week tommorow you probably wouldnt ave time to read it all, best thing to do is go and grab a guide book and just wander around, my top tip is to look up a lot as you never seem to understand the size of everything in new york.

customs in the states are how customs in the uk will be when we join the border agency, ie immigration and customs are all one dept, however my experience with US customs, on a non-proffesional basis, has always been a good one they are polite and courteous to travellers.

    all the best

So you done the MAN-PHL-NYC route with US airways? How is it? How are US, compared to AA? You ever got the train from PHL-NYC, or anything else (car etc)?
You got enough question in there to keep you going?
  • Our flights from Manchester to New York on Friday (4th April) have been cancelled. No notification - we found out by accident looking on the website.
Hotels and Broadway show and helicopter flight have been booked and some paid for. No explanation for the cancellation has been given. This involves 4 of us.
Has this happened to any one else before - what do you do?

its not a bad flight... i've done it at least 4 times..... the immigration at PHL is second to none, the only issues are when you've rechecked you luggage, there could sometimes be a wait, to get back through security (any liquids, bye bye, so make sure they go in your luggage before you recheck!) and then you have to get a bus through to terminal F. that in itself is alright, (the bus), but when you get to F, you might be delayed (2 out of 4, 1 by 10 mins, the second by 3 hours, but it was bad weather), and then you land at LGA.. which by far is my favourite airport to land at in NYC...

Mainly because, it is so near to manhattan, and i got a taxi once, and was at my hotel (Cosmo) within 20 minutes, at a cost of around $30....

as for comparisons US - AA, umm.. its a difficult one, as i flew a different route... if you're flying from MAN with AA< you'll probably go Chicago first, which makes you journey a lot longer, not somethign i wanted ever to do..

now.. AA - US, generally, they are the same kinda service. however, recently i flew Delta, and i think their service on a TATL flight was better than US...

    hope that helps..

if you haven't been notified, the flights should still exist, and if they don't, BA will probably re-route you.. i can't believe that they will cancel a flight and not notifiy people..... did you book directly thru BA? some websites like last minute will not notify you of changes... it is an interesting one.. i'd call BA in the morning and ask what is happening.. what route they're giving you, ask for compensation, as changing at LDN will be a longer overall flight time etc etc....
  • Markymoo,
    Thanks for that.
The other couple that we were travelling with had a text message to say that the flight had been cancelled but we had nothing - and no offer re re-routing.

time is of the essence ....go on to ba's main site and put your original dates in and the flight options will be via london ....you may have to go into further options for flight times but choose a suitable itinerary (check that one flight doesn't land at heathrow and leave from gatwick ) ....write down the flight numbers and ask ba to put you on this schedule instead .
ask if they have made alternative arrangements for you with another carrier
i would really not want to fly with ba via heathrow at the moment ...have you looked at the cost of alternatives from manchester ?
you are probably covered under the EU regs on air travel but that's another minefield ....but maybe worth investigating
of course ask ba the question about why the flight has been cancelled ? make sure the flight has been cancelled and not just that you have been bumped off
