randomtask. Thanks for that I know where City Hall is so will go there for the camera and look out for the apple store. My son needs a new IPOD so I hope they are still a lot cheaper there!
Shelby: I am travelling with my teenage daughter in 3 weeks time staying at the Cosmo and markymoo said it was safe for us as it was safe for his Mum when she was there, so I think that should be assurance for you. I understand the sub way runs close by too so not far to walk to get back. One thing I noticed last year was how many police were on the subway stations and that was re assuring too0 -
i'll sum up the last couple of posts in one fairly large on... here goes..
HoneyPie, think about getting a US Sim card while you're out there... i think it then costs $1.50 a minute to call back to the UK, but its a pay as you go system, so you'll know what you're spending. you can get international phone cards at many deli's around the city so you won't have a problem..
Christa1, the J&R store is the only one in NY, and it is within walking distance of the Cosmo, walk out the hotel by the chambers street exit, turn left, walk down 2 blocks, turn right, and then you'll have city hall park on your left, walk through the park, and you'll see all the different J&R stores there... BEFORE you leave the cosmo, make sure you get a discount voucher from the racks of leaflets, i picked up a $15 off a $150 purchase, (great for your camera purchase), and i think there was a $10 off $100 there too, might be useful for your ipod, and will make it cheaper than the apple store.
Shelby. I've just asked my mum, and her reply was "Yes Definately" with response to the question of whether it was safe area. There are 3 subway stops close by, and plenty of amenities within walking distance. Midtown is 9 minutes away by subway, however, after 10pm trains get a bit sparse, so it might be easier to jump into a taxi.
the subway lines 1,2,3 are the closest to the hotel, being on the corner right outside, the A,C lines, being 1 block away, and the R,W lines being 2 blocks across and 1 block downtown.
anything else?

Hi,
I'm looking for a very very very cheap hotel in NYC. Probably on the 17th or 18th July for 2 nights. I don't mind if i have to share a bathroom.
I have found the Big Apple Hostel. I don't really want to share a room but they have rooms where you share with 3 others for only $40 a night and the location is right by times aquare.
Has anyone stayed here or have any other suggestions??0 -
nice hotel, found the block system confusing at first, but plenty of helpfull new yorkers. did the helicopter flight well worth it,found the gospel choir very rushed the buffet a bit same. the view from the marriot hotel view resteraunt ,very good espically the empire at night.agree with everyone its a safe city, even the subway .a must is the church opposite the twin towers tribute centere, but century 21 GOOD BARGAINS but the sales girls need manners, and a kick up the backside. my best bit central park and the apple store ....:T what a place:cool: :cool:0

We got back last Thursday, and agree-What a Place!
The lift up to the Marriot resteraunt made me sick, went too fast!!
View from Top of the Rock out of this world.
My fav: skating in Central Park with that skyline!
I found the sales assistants in Centrurt 21 lovely, very very helpful and polite, obviously didn't get the same people as you-David- or maybe they'd been on a customer care course between our visits!
I am glad to be back and have a proper cup of tea, see green fields and sheep, and not smell food around every corner, and hear impatient drivers all night!!:j0 -
Hello, I've been recently converted to Apple and have just been in Londons Apple store this weekend and now I'd like to go to the New York one when we go in April. But it seems there is more than one. If we are pushed for time, can anyone recommend the best one?
I'm also looking to buy a gel skin for my macbook. So far I have found 3 possible places that might sell gelaskins: Datavision, Audiocubes and In Motion Entertainment. If anyone's been to any of these and thinks I'll be wasting my time visiting them, please let me know.
Final bit of advice...any special place I should be buying make-up from? I need to top up on Clinique.
Thanks0 -
for those of you going to New York City, you might want to try https://www.applefinds.com. the site lists sales and bargains by local businesses.0

Thanks
the biggest apple store is the 14th street store.
however, i prefer the soho store, as it is in a nice area, and the staff seem more friendly. It also is the original apple store in NYC..
as for clinique.. most cosmetics i get from Macy's, but you might want to try sephora, many locations in manhattan, as they're quite good for cosmetics too..

I got back from NY last Thursday too and I can say its honestly the best place I have ever been! I'm now looking into possibly going to work there for a year I loved it so much!
Just thought I would add a couple of tips too...
1) Make-up - the rite aid pharmacy have good offers (bogof at the mo) otherwise there is a decent shop in times square near virgin megastore. I thought bloomies was quite expensive tho.
2) The unlimited metrocard for the subway is superb - tho make sure u swipe it correctly cos if u try to use it again straight away it blocks u for 18mins.
3) We used the new york pass and this was also excellent. We paid for it before we went, so entry to the main sites were free and we usually by-passed the queues. We got an upgrade on the helicopter flight, discount in macy's, free gift in bloomies and $10 off per person in planet hollywood.
4) if you want to see a sports game try to book online in advance as we left it too late to get tickets for the knicks.
5) Carnegie deli is great for a breakfast that will keep u going all day! Bubba gump is also fun.
6) The museum of sex is good (for the VERY open minded) and the bodies exhibition is really interesting (tho i wouldnt go straight after lunch).
7) the staten island ferry is an absolute bargain (free!) and will give u a brilliant view of lady liberty without actually having to join the massive queue to go out to the island.
i hope this helps someone

just a couple of pointers..
the subway card, never blocks you for 18 minutes, unless you've swiped and it tells you to swipe again, and you CHANGE turnstiles (common tourist error!!), or you swipe, and hand the card to someone else to swipe.. as i say in my guide, as long as you keep swiping at the same turnstile, you should never have this problem. It took me 3 - 4 times (very occasionally) to swipe through, but it might have taken your fare already, so don't change turnstiles.
as for the discount in macy's and free gift in bloomies, these are standard offers that you DON'T have to buy a New York pass for.. and you get a free bag in Macy's if you take a receipt to the visitors centre, even if you've used your discount!
