Got back on Saturday from NY
Enjoyed it a lot. Like most people here I would like to go back again.
Markymoo I think chezza is right about the subway metrocard. If you swipe
successfully and do not pass through the gate quickly you get locked out. I
saw a NY native locked out and he actually bought another ticket which he
used to pass through.0 -

but why would you swipe through and not go through... chezza said, make sure you swipe correctly.... sometimes the turnstiles beep, and people make the mistake of changing turnstiles, thus then being locked out...
i've gone through these turnstiles, with HUGE suitcase, and never once had a problem, of them "timing out"0 -
Just to point out there are two different types of Metrocard. The unlimited which is for one person and the PAYG type which works like an Oyster card EXCEPT you can use it for several people for the same journey. No problems passing that one back for the next person to swipe through and completely legal.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -
just as a reminder, there is all this information on the metrocards, and the different types on my guide, on getting in and around manhattan, the link is on the first page of this thread...0

Hi,
Just wondering when/where would be the best place to get US dollars. I'm off to New York on Wednesday and have found a really good exchange rate of 1.975 in London. BUT someone then said to me that I might get a better rate if I wait and get the money in New York.
What do you think? I doubt the exchange rate will get to $2 to the £ but would the rate really better in the US?
Also, (a rather bizarre shopping request) is it cheaper to buy north face jackets in New York? They're about £100+ in the UK and was hoping they might be cheaper out there. Does anyone know?
And (last one, promise!) are there any events/festivals happening there next week?
Thanks in advance!0 -
events - try either https://www.pollstar.com for concert listings, and maybe village voice website for anything else
dollars.... pot luck.... https://www.no1currency.co.uk are offering 1.95 commission free, and there are many branches around the UK... as for the rate being better in the US... doubtful... but if it isn't, you're screwed...
and as for the jackets.. price them up while you're there!!!!!!! (aka, i have no clue!)0 -

Is that TEG? They have the best rate. XE.com has the rate @ $2.00 to £1 and TEG are selling dollars at 1.98 so if you want to buy cash I doubt you will get a better deal. I got mine from their Strand branch.
It might move a cent or 2 (up or down) by next week but then you would have to search for a place in NY where they dont rip you off. Why have that hassle?0 -
markymoo, where else did you get to in NYC other that the the rum house?0
