Hi, I have booked a flight and hotel to NY for June for a week. Do I have to have a visa? If so what does that involve?

if you have a UK passport, and it is machine readable, you should be able to fly on the Visa Waiver Program.

Do a search on these forums for that, as there has been a lot of discussion..

Wow this whole topic is fabulous. What a great job :)

My friend, her mother and Aunt have a girls trip booked for October (6 days) and reading through everything I'm excited already. We will probably be working loosely to an itinerary, similar to bigspender2, reason being I went to London a few years ago for Hogmanay and January sales but regret not doing enough when there.

I've read through the thread a number of times and there is mention of buying theatre tickets at Times Sq etc. If still running in October I would like to see Phantom or Mamma Mia. Is it possible to get tickets for big shows last minute or not worth the risk of missing out on what you want?

My friend would also like to visit Harlem (Mother and Aunt won't be). She claims she once stayed at the hostel or YMCA. It's perhaps a common misconception that the area is ghetto-ish, local 'mom and pop' stores etc. I think it could be fun, and an experience but wouldn't fancy it if there wasn't great reason for going, it either wasn't safe or there was difficulties in getting taxi's back.

Last one for now, is it possible to go out partying/clubbing in Manhattan? Being Scottish we drink like the American's eat and apart from Florida have never gone on holiday without visiting a bar. We will be staying at one of Sheraton's on 7th if that helps.

    Thank you x
    Hi,
I can only share my experience with you regarding show tickets. We were in New York the week before Christmas (fabulous and I've been to a few places believe me). There are 2 ticket booths which sell discounted tickets. One in Broadway itself which always seemed to have a never ending queue and the other is in Southport Street and never seems to have a queue. We decided we would like to see Mama Mia. I have to say I thought it would be a non starter but we were amazed at the choice of shows on offer. We got tickets for Mama Mia straightaway and at half price!!! They were OK seats although I have to tell you the Agent 'elaborated on the truth' slightly. Anyhow, still enjoyed the show and at half price there was certainly little to complain about. Its a pity the Extravaganza show at Radio City won't have started when you are there in October. The only tickets available for this show (2007) were $250 (no chance) so I will book online before we go this time. Friends have seen it and said it was spectacular. Theatre holds 6000. You'll have a fab time. Sally

I'm off to New York with my friend in 3 weeks for 8 days, and I too am scottish and would love to go clubbing or at least out for a good drink one night. Anyone have any recommendations? We are staying at The POD on 51st street
    Thanks

The Broadway booth is temporarily not there, and has been moved a couple of blocks.

The temporary location is at the Marriott Marquis Hotel during the renovation of Duffy Square: West 46th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue

Perfect. I get the impression New York could be full of expensive cocktail type bars in the touristy areas but I may be wrong. Have to lets know who you get on.

there are PLENTY of dive bars in NYC, and I know of a good small piano/dive bar in midtown just off times square. (rum house, 47th & broadway @ edison hotel)

There are plenty more in greenwich village (try bleeker street) and you can easily get a beer for $5.

the posh places you'll pay upwards of $8 for the same thing!!!
