Hi - going to new york for my 30th on 1-5th may never been - any advice for hotels - activities, sites to see, flights would be much appreciated...Thanks0

Hi Peeps,
Just wanted to say that we are in NY at the mo at the Cosmopolitan Hotel and it is FAB. Although there is a bit of traffic noise it doesn't really bother us as it's not that bad. The room we have is a loft room and it's impressive it's clean and they come in everyday to give us clean towels etc... we managed to get a room through hotelconnextions.com (sp) for less than £70 per night for the week. We have loved downtown but have found TimeSquare a bit much and very, very busy so am glad we are not staying there.
This has been a dream of mine for many, many years and my BF made it possible, but what made it extra special was all the great advice on this forum. We would never have known where was good to eat (Mudville 9 has been a fav so far!!!) or some of the kools things to do (free rides on the Staten island ferry instead of an over crowed cruise) and a massive thanks to Markymoo we followed his advice on the hotel and flight and saved loads so thank you.
Snoops xx
PS Cannot wait to go up to the Top Of The Rock tomorrow and watch the sunset!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Chaos is Life, Life is chaos. Control is an illusion

I'm SO glad you're enjoying your time in New York City..
Try Reade Street Pub, which is within walking distance of the Hotel,
Walk out of the side door, cross the road, onto the little triangle with trees in it, cross again, you're at tribeca pharmacy... walk down the street, (you should be on the left side of the road) and the pub is a little bit down..
directly opposite, you have DEKK which is a really nice restaurant, and a couple of doors back (back towards the hotel) on the corner opposite the pharmacy, is a WONDERFUL and cheap deli...0 -
ooohhhh thank you we were looking for a new restaurant to try tonight and as it's raining we didn't want to go far so that sounds perfect.

snoopy and woodstock: Glad you are having a great time in NY. Following markymoo's advice my daughter and I are also staying at the Cosmopolitan in April, although I have booked a room with 2 beds and asked for a quiet room, so hope it is good as everyone says.
Markymoo, maybe you can advise- I know my daughter cannot drink alchohol as she is under 21 however would we be allowed to go into a pub in NY so long as she had a soft drink? Not sure what their laws are. Would DEKK be OK too for a mother and daughter? We are wanting to explore this area more this time so would be good to find places on our doorstep, also are we ok waliking around there at night on our own?0 -
DEKK would be fine for a mother/daughter, its a really nice restaurant, casual clothes, and has a funky modern feel (damn, i've used the word funky, i'm sure that went out in the 80's!)
as for going into a bar and drinking soft drinks... its a difficult one... i'm sure the rules are that you can't go in unless your over 21, however, some pubs/bars/restaurants, will let you in and sit at a table, DON'T sit at the bar.. pot luck really..
As for walking around, you'll be fine, honestly... if my mum can do it on her own, anyone can.. Its reasonably quiet at night, the main streets are well lit, and there are plenty of good (though some pricey) restaurants around..

UPDATE - i've just been on opentable.com, and it says they are currently closed, though when i was there in september 07, opentable said the same, and the restaurant was open.... odd!! if snoopy and woodstock get online soon, it would be nice to know if it was open or not.. cheers!

Thanks Markymoo, that's reassuring. To be honest, I don't want to spend a fortune on food this time, we really pushed the boat out last year although I think we will still go to Chez Josephine again, it was wine which I found really expensive last year as we had it ( my sister and I ) every night! So good quality reasonable places is what I am wanting this time. My daughter is off to Uni this autumn( providing she gets in!!) so still fancy the resataurant at the top of the Marriott as a treat, (this might be our last trip together), although I understand the food is only OK but views are great.0

Hello all, just got back about a week ago from NY.
Had a really great time. Thank you Markymoo for the recommendation!;)
Just want to recommend a few places that I enjoyed. The cosmo cafe, which I liked for breakfast it used to be part of the hotel but is now owned separately.
Kitchenette on Chambers Street turn right from the hotel, excellent for brunch, coffees, cakes dinner....
Also I used a city pass which is £30(ish) and you get admission to six NY attractions, empire state, guggenheim a harbour cruise and a few more museums, if you want to do some museums I'd recommend it. The Guggenheim was a really lovely buidling tho and I love buildings, old and new so it was great just to wander around.
Will post some more when I think of it. Cannot wait to go back!!!:Doooh look only about 220 posts and I got round to doing my Avatar already!!0 -
One other thing, when I was there Dekk, which I had wanted to go to, did appear closed!:(oooh look only about 220 posts and I got round to doing my Avatar already!!0

one thing i found that the cosmo cafe, and the cosmo daily news, are EXPENSIVE, when compared to the deli across the road on reade street / hudson street.... so i wander across there, get by breakfast, and slump back in bed with my hangover to read a paper while munching on my bagel!!!
glad you had a great time!!!. .i go on wednesday!0
