    Hi folks
I'm planning on taking my wife to New York for her 30th birthday later this year. Her b'day is on November 29th and ideally we'd like to be there for that date, and we'd like to be there for approximately a week. The best deal I've found so far is £315 per person leaving on the 27th and coming back a week later, we'd be flying from Gatwick to Newark.
I'm not really bothered about where we fly to, or from, (within reason - we live in Leicester so we're pretty central) but if I can get it cheaper than what I''m getting it at the moment I'd obviously snap their hands off.
I didn't think £315 was too bad considering some of the prices I've had but looking at markymoo's 'starring system' it seems quite excessive...
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

Read my guide of booking a new york holiday, and then you'll learn about the 3 month rule, which is basically when you'll start getting cheaper flights..

to be honest, november can be a bit pricier, but i still think you should be able to get something for around the £250 mark!

  • Ok, thanks for the advice. To be honest I'd really like to book as soon as possible, that way its one less thing to worry about. Still have to find and book a hotel too...
I checked the other thread and have managed to find a flight for under £300 (just), gonna keep checking this week and if I can't find anything cheaper I think I'll bite the bullet. As least I can relax a bit then.

    Thanks again

be prepared to pay for the hotel tho if central- they are bloomin expensive unless you get lucky with a 'deal' at that time of year...

again, hotels have deals on, but not 9 months in advance..

if you do book things now, one piece of advice... DON'T ever check the prices again.... .
  • Try the Pennsylvania hotel on 7th avenue. I always stop there when i go to New york which is mainly November time and many many times but book via another booking site rather than the hotels website coz you can find the same rooms cheaper. The location is fantastic for sightseeing, right opposite Madison square garden, empire state behind, 5 minutes walk to times square. It sometimes gets said that the rooms arent up to much but the trick is to send the hotel an email in advance to say that you would like to request a refurbished room if possible. Ive got a refurb room every time and its been very nice.
I also tend to wait for the Virgin atlantic sale later in the year for the sale.
Depends how long you are prepared to wait. They usually have good deals on for that time of year.

the pennsylvania is a godawful hotel and never seems to get good reviews on tripadvisor.. the location is bang outside madison square garden and penn station, so if you look out onto the street, which a lot of the rooms do, its noisy and noisy, and always busy... personally its not a great location, and you're not guaranteed a refurbished room even if you email to ask them.

there are so many better hotels in NYC, there are nice clean hotels in quieter locations.. trust me.. the penn isn't one of them.... i personally like the cosmopolitan as i've said many times. more often than not, it is around the same cost or slightly cheaper than the penn, its only 8 minutes away from times square by subway, and is in a much nicer location, as it is in a wonderful village location of tribeca,
  • Have stayed at the Hotel Penn and have to say it was not up to scratch. In fact, it was one of the worst hotels I’ve stayed in. In its favour is the location as I will agree it is handy if you’re in NY to sample the hustle and bustle of the lights of midtown and being opposite MSG and just a short walk from the Empire State Building does add a certain sense of 'being there'.

But like markymoo, I prefer the quieter charm of soho, or tribeca further downtown which to me is a far more appealing vibe and more in keeping with NY as native New Yorkers know it.

Have to agree about the Penn. Haven't stayed there myself (I stayed at the W New York, fantastic but certainly not for those on a budget), but I know of a couple who checked in there ... and checked out half an hour later! x
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Reading your comments I may be tempted to hang fire and keep scanning the web for prices. I'm not sure I'll be able to hold on until 3 months before we go - I'm not sure she'll let me! :P ... But I appreciate your help folks, and will certainly be keeping my eyes out for deals, which I'll share on here should I see any.

My BF and I are going to NY for 8 nights in late September and are looking for a place to stay.

We have had a recommendation for hotels in Secaucus (New Jersey) which is a $1.50 / 20 minute bus ride away from Port Authority. I have so far found The Hampton Inn for $1232 (average $152 per night) inclusive of taxes etc.

Any opnions on if this a good deal?

    Thanks
