  • Edging closer to March now so better get my act together...

    Markymoo...

    Nationwide accounts.

Is it just the credit cards that doesn't charge for the exchange rate or can I open another debit account on top of my current halifax one?

Probably a daft question but having looked back through the thread can't see anything on teh topic.

Looking to take about £900 cash with me for 6 days, probably by an iphone/ipod touch. Is the idea to not take much cash and let the card do all the work?

    Thanks in advance mate.

    ok..

both nationwide accounts (flex current and credit card) give you free foreign currency exchange, just make sure you use an ATM at a bank, (Wachovia, HSBC, North Fork etc etc) rather than the small ATMS in McDonalds, Deli's Shops etc, as they will charge (albeit small 0.99¢) a fee. So you could theoretically get a Flex Account, and use this to keep your money in, personally however, i prefer cash, and prefer to have cash with me at all times, so i'm never left short......

As for the iphone, well, good luck on that, you MUST pay by credit card, and remember they are LOCKED to AT&T, and maybe, just maybe, you can unlock it for all networks.... PM Me... ;)

and £900 should be plenty for a week in NYC.. i'm taking about the same, and my only big purchase is a $200 camera i want (i have an SLR, but need something portable!)

Markymoo, can you recommend getting a digital in NY? My poor sister was fleeced in Times Square last year, and only after she bought this really expensive camera did she notice on the receipt that no refunds would be given. The big chain stores like Comp USA said they would refund- but too late was the cry, however my daughter would like a new one, I had thought about buying at the duty free in Heathrow before we left for NY, but do you think buying in NY a better idea?
Also I totally totally endorse Nationwide Debit and Flex accounts- brilliant. No extra charges great rate of exchange, that way I only carry a small amount of cash, which suits me as we are me and my daughter so I am really nervous with lots of money( having said that I have lots of bling on my hands and wrists so maybe I should leave that at home too?)
  • For electronic goods like camera, definitely steer clear of Times Square. B+H photo, J&R and Adorama are the recommended places. You can make a good saving on the majority of models.

  • i am looking for inspiration, i want to propose to my partner in new york (this november) and was looking for inspiration as to a typical romantic new york style proposal, had thought about limos ring from tiffanys etc but wondered if any body had any ideas
  • Hi folks
I'm planning on taking my wife to New York for her 30th birthday later this year. Her b'day is on November 29th and ideally we'd like to be there for that date, and we'd like to be there for approximately a week. The best deal I've found so far is £315 per person leaving on the 27th and coming back a week later, we'd be flying from Gatwick to Newark.
I'm not really bothered about where we fly to, or from, (within reason - we live in Leicester so we're pretty central) but if I can get it cheaper than what I''m getting it at the moment I'd obviously snap their hands off.
I didn't think £315 was too bad considering some of the prices I've had but looking at markymoo's 'starring system' it seems quite excessive...
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
