I agree Century 21 is the best for bargains in New York but you have to either go by yourself or with people who are prepared to shop HARD as you can find yourself in there all day!
haven't actually made it to woodbury common yet even though i lived in the US for a while. The fates always conspired against me. But from what I know it is more for people who are into designer gear siimilar to the outlet malls over here
you can actually sign up to their mailing list before you go so you can see what it is going to be on sale etc to see if it is worth the day out of townNewbie Debt Ninja0 -
I am going to NY in a couple of weeks and staying at Astor on the Park. What is the best way to get to hotel from JFK, I have looked at the subway map which doesn't look too complex. But in your honest opinion and after a 7 hr flight (arrive NY 11 am local time) is a taxi or subway the best option?Second and final LBM 01/01/11 Nearly got there but fell of wagon. HAVE to do it this time :mad:0

Have you read the - Guide to Travelling in and Around Manhattan
I'm sure that explains the many different options to getting to manhattan from the airports...0 -
Just an idea but to go to New York around 27th December for about a week, would it be mega expensive because of new years eve, etc.....
Just a thought - will finish my degree after 6 years of study so I'm trying to think of something fab for the end of the year! I bet even if I managed to bag cheap flights - say £500ish for two then the hotel would cost a bomb, as well as food, drinks, etcc....
Depressed myself even more now ..................0 -
how about you fly out something between the 3rd / 5th Jan, because then it gets alot cheaper, as it is low season... it's only delaying it by a week or so, but you'll still get a great holiday to kick off the new year with...0

Hi
I'm going to NY for the first time April 6th -April14th. Going to be ther for 8 days so I'm going to try and get a lot done. Has anyone ever done the Big Apple Greeter http://www.bigapplegreeter.org/ this is a free service and your tour guide will take you to whatever borough you choose, you also get a free metro card for the day. Tour lasts about 6 hours and gives you a real New Yorkers guide to the city. Was thinking of doing this at the start of my trip as then I will know how to use the subway, find out nice resturants etc. Everyone on Trip advisor has given it a big thumbs up.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

ella...
the new york greeter is great, just make sure you request one that is going to do what you want, learning the subway is easy, but the new york greeter will help you out to find your bearings, it can still be confusing after that, but as i said.. great fun..

Is Woodbury Common the cheapest place for good clothes? Got two teenage girls in tow, who will want to shop 'till they drop. Whats the cheapest of getting to Woodbury?
I went to woodbury common last friday, i suppose it does depend on what type of clothes you buy if it's designer then you probably would get some stuff, i was very disappointed and came away with 1 quicksilver t-shirt for my son and a Roxy skirt for myself, they were the only things i considered a bargain 14 dollars for both, but for the 39 dollar fare i wouldn't go back and consider it a waste of a very preciouse day, centuary 21 on the other hand was brill, it like our tk maxx you need to get in there for a bit of a rumage but bargains gallore, Zara on 5th had some good prices and bought some nice things in The Loft. had a fantastic 5 days and will definatly go again planning on taking the kids next time, fantastic city, I don't enjoy London but couldn't fault New York.
i can only repeat again that it depends on the time of year that you visit woodbury common....there's no magic formula as it works like outlet shopping here ....good times where you come out with bags of gear and bad times when you buy next to nothing.
imho the real bargains are to be had when the major dept stores have their sales...century 21 i can take it or leave it and would rather visit tj maxx (again dependant on time of year for real bargains ...again the same as tk maxx bargains here)0 -
Thanks Markymoo! I'm getting really excited, been wanting to go the New york for Years! Think I'll definetly do the big apple greeter, sounds like a really worthwhile experience.0

Hi All
Well been back a few weeks from NYC now and just wanted to tell you how it went quickly and thank everyone on here.. esp Markymoo.
Had an excellent time and can't wait to get back. Went skating in central park (was shocked at central park as i thought it was something like Albert quare on eastenders...i'm soo thick!haha) Got the wedding rings aswell...woowhoo. If you shop in Macy's make sure you go to the balcony to the visiters centre and pickup your 'vistors discount card' extra 11% off.. you will need to show id mind. I recomend the red loop buses aswell.. $49 for 2day hop on hop off pass. takes you to brooklyn, uptown and downtown, with a tour man aswell to go through the info.
Abercrombie and fitch was the best shop for clothes...went in there everyday.(7days) Subway was so easy...even for me and you seen how stupid i am. hehe
My only regret was we took to many clothes over with us.. (half a case full) and that was too much as we bought sooo much over there, would have bought more but cases would have been too heavy.
We watched a 'off broadway' show aswell.. 'the fan-tastics' an it was only about 50 of us there and that was a full house. it was fan-tastic (pardon the pun!)
We stayed at Cosmepolitan and was a grat location as was above the subway so we rolled out of bed and was on the tube practically! hehe
Ps - don't let the misses loose in Tiffany's.. we spent $1500 in all..that was for wedding rings and bracelet mind, we checked the prices over here and would have paid over £1200 for it all so saved quite a bit!
Enjoy all....0
