Markymoo & others - you seem to know a lot about New York, so hope you can help me a bit.
I've been a bit obsessed with NY for about 10 years (I'm only 23), and finally want to go and see if it lives up to my fantasy! I did a quick search on expedia.co.uk and found a deal for about £800 - a hotel in the middle of Manhatten (centre of everything I think?). That price includes flights and accommodation.
I am flexible about when I can go but that price was for september 8th - 15th - 7 days. Any advice, e.g.:- Location - good or bad (I want to see empire state, ground zero, shopping, times square, central park, the MAIN attractions - not so much museums and art) - also good bars and restaurants.
- Time of year - early september - is that good? Is it cold/hot/more expensive or cheaper?
- Should I be booking a deal with flights and hotel or book seperately
- What else should I think about?
No rush in booking, just thinking at the minute, but really want to make the break and go for it.Amo L'Italia0 -

to be honest on price you may find late august cheaper than september (you may have to wait to see what the major carriers have to offer in the next few months )...as it's holiday season for a lot of people on the east coast0 -
also, if you read through what i've said in plenty of other posts.... midtown isn't the centre of everything, what with mass transit (sorry.. public transport), and the subways running 24/7, you can stay anywhere...
you say you want to go to good bars and restaurants.. i have to say from my 9 trips to NYC, that there are not many good ones (when comparing to other areas of Manhattan), in midtown.. Little Italy, Chinatown, SoHo, TriBeCa, have a hell of a lot of good restaurants, and Lower East Side, East Village for good bars...0 -

Just so I know what I'm up against, what do you think is an acceptable price for flights + hotel stay for 7 nights in NYC? Maybe around July-September time?
I'll have a browse through the thread now.Amo L'Italia0 -
my signature gives you ideas of flights..
£250 is kinda standard for a flight to NYC, anything less than that is a good bargain..
you can be looking at around £100 a night for a reasonable hotel, with a private bath, a lot cheaper for something with a shared bath, which is something i'm never keen on...
check tripadvisor.com for reviews on your hotels you look at0 -
Hi Guys,
Love this thread. I'm planning on going to NY with my girlfriend in November (15-22) for my 30th. Would like to stay at the Sofitel but the budget just isn't going to cover it. So we've decided to stay at the Cosmopolitan on the strenth of the recomendations from markymoo and on tripadvisor.
A quick question for you markymoo if you'd be so kind.
Regarding the cosmopolitan, is it worth booking the room now or to wait nearer to the date? Just trying to watch the pennies so they can be spent on a night out in NY etc.
Many thanks guys0 -
I am trying to get a 3 night city break for my Son and his GF in New York for this Febraury, just four weeks time. I have a 4 star hotel from Thomsons, the Millenium Broadway and flights for the total of £962, any advice whether or not I will get a cheaper deal and who with?
He has never been before so isn't confident booking flights and hotel separately..any advice from regular New York travellers appreciated
Thank You0 -
i'd book everything seperately.... you don't say exactly what dates / airport he'll be flying from, so i can't do any prices for booking things seperately, but am more than willing to...
EDIT
however, if it is truly a price of £962 for BOTH of them, i'd grab that price, because i really cannot beat it... i'm looking at a cost of £855 each!
also, the Millennium Broadway is really only a 3, maybe 3.5 star hotel, looking at various different ratings around the internet0 -
Hi
Markymoo, from what I have read you seem to be a bit of a pro at New York so i was wondering if you could cast your eye over a deal ive found. Im traveling to new york and will be there from 24th-29th april, i have found the Hotel Pennsylvania for 5 nights ro for £420 (ive already booked my flights for £150 each return from man-jfk), what do you think of that deal? i didnt think it was too bad, dont know whether to book it or wait until nearer the time as this hotel seems to be around the £300 mark for 5 nights in feb??? Im even thinking of using priceline as the 4* deals for £70 per night (when you can bid and win on them are fab)
any suggestions please would be grateful0 -

Hi markymoo
Thank you for replying:T its for 2, flying from London on the 13th Feb returning 16th Feb, flights and 3 nights room only. The web site is on a go slow so perhaps I should ring their booking line.0
