Anyone been to Coney Island - just wondering how long it would take to get there either by subway or taxi.
    Thank you all who post.

a quick glance on wikipedia tells me that the Q F N D lines on the subway go to coney island

Q is the express train, and from 14th St Union Square Station it takes 47 minutes to get through to Coney Island!

a taxi would be very expensive, when compared to a $2 per person subway fare.

Off to New York in 5 weeks time, arriving 2nd November for a week.

Can someone tell me what sort of weather we can expect? How cold will it be? Need to work out what to pack, although intend to travel light as just might be doing some shopping while we're there.

    Thanks

Hi Angua2, there are some links in the first post of this thread to markymoo's guides and other info. I've just added a link to Weather in New York.

If you (or anyone else reading) find useful info to go in there, please post on here/PM me :)

Ta, acushla! ;) I've family in Brooklyn and that burrough is so under visited (if there's such a word!)... And so much cheaper than Manhattan. Was wondering if any of my fav websites on Brooklyn would be of interest....

Oh! Can I add a tip? If anyone is able to travel with their laptop or is going to NYC for shopping, do go online somehow - via internet cafe if necessary - and get the "skinny" on current discounts, sales, vouchers, coupons, etc. and save big bucks! ;) i.e., Dealcatcher.com

    Better still!

Do your shopping online ahead of time so that your deliveries can go to your hotel - (don't see why not, one is allowed to specify shipping address as distinct from billing address, n'est-ce pas?) - and then spend your time doing the truly fun stuff (sorry, shopping is great for a wee bit of a trip but the idea of a whole trip based on shopping has me running for the hills - lol): museums, theatre, galleries, dining, zoos, parks, etc.

A caveat: not all US online retailers accept creditcards originating from foreign banks - so you might have to do a bit of homework or use alternative, like PayPal....

  • Hello guys,

I'm ready to book the New Yorker for late November but I'm trying to establish what type of room will be allocated under the option "Double". The New Yorker has several types of double room, with the prices varying quite a bit dependant on the view, size of the room etc. I have tried emailing the hotel directly and hotelconxions with no response. Is it safe to assume it’ll be the most basic room? If so it’s actually cheaper to book directly from the hotel website which seems strange.

    Many thanks.

    Martin.

A double will be just that, a double bed! Whatever comes within the hotel amenities will vary, and may just be a standard room, or have safe access and lcd tvs.

Oooo I stayed at the New Yorker, highly recommended by the way.

Our renovated room had lovely lcd tvs in, not that thats important. Let me know if you need to know anything.
