Tip everyone and be damned, a policeman looks at you give him money, some walks past you give them money, get off a subway run up the front and tip the driver.

The theory is anyone who gives you a service ie helps with your bags you tip however it all goes a tad squiffy in restaurants because you dont tip mcdonalds/kfc workers and yet waiting staff almost insist on 15%to 20%, i once had a waiter say "is that it" to me to which i rebuffed if you had paid as much attention to me during the meal as you did at the end the tip would have been more sizeable.

Also be wary of service charge already added on to your bill etc.

My Top "Tip" is tip if you want not because your obliged,

mad how you tip the person who pulls you a pint. or a taxi driver who drives like a loony and stinks of eggy pumps. does anyone tip the person serving you fish and chips ???

    not me
Was in BB Kings Blues Bar and Grill had a nice meal paid and tipped accordingly went into shop and bought a small pin badge (about $4)Paid with $5 got change talking to the assistant about BBs health etc. After a few mins talking i thought i would tip her for being nice and helpful so with only 1 $1 i thought was too mean i gave her $5 my Little 11 year old asked why i gave a $5 tip for a $4 badge couldnt explain it myself.

I have noticed an annoying trend of shops that leave a tip cup on the counter, i mean "normal" shops that you just get a can of coke from.

I could bang on and get heated about the tip culture but wont as its a person to person subject.

  • If you don't like the service in a restaurant where gratuity is automatically added to the bill are you allowed to cross it out and just pay the price of the meal?? Was very tempted to do that once but didn't have the balls in the end.

Also while I'm here just wanted to say a big thanks to everyone on here, especially Markymoo for his guides, and all the other various bits of info that I have spent hours reading, as I have just booked a little break to NYC for next Feb and I'm very excited!! Flying with BA and 4 nights accommodation at Hotel Metro (inc breakfast) for a smidge over £1000 for the 2 of us. Can't wait now so thanks again to everyone for answering all my questions before I had chance to ask them!

with regards to tipping at the Cosmopolitan..

i leave a tip, a couple of single dollar bills, normally on the dressing table that there is in the room, there is no other money lying around... it never gets taken.. however, i just keep leaving it there til i check out, so someone eventually gets it... maybe i'm not doing it right!!!

towards the end of the holiday, i normally tell shop owners, just normal shops, to keep the coins, as i'll never get around to spending them, and they are normally very grateful...

Just had this emailed to me, the b*ggers,:rotfl: - we can't afford to go and right over my birthday it is! Is this a good deal for 3 nights, 4* hotel and flights for 2 though?

What Hotel are you looking at? I can see five 4* Hotel deals

    Hotel Chandler.

I went in May and had to go by Virgin (had Virgin vouchers), and it cost us a fair bit more than that for a 3 night stay.

  • I think it is a good price! The cheapest deal I could find is £526 flying with Virgin. For an extra £100 you could stay at The Benjamin which is 5*
