If you live near a 'Home Bargains' shop they sell popcorn ready to microwave for 19p per packet. The kids love it and it takes 3 mins!

Just wanted to say a big 'thanks' to all who replied. I tried dbelle's pan method last night and gave it a 'Toonie' topping of icing sugar and salt - completely gorgeous!

I'm off to try Softstuff's microwave method in a few mins.

Does anyone know if the air popped stuff tastes different to the oil/pan stuff?

    thanks again

  • It tends to pop a littel bigger and isn't as greasy. Unless you put butter on it salt etc doesn't stick, but it still is better for you. Spraying it with a little oil as Mrs. A said is a good idea, and adding cajun spices to make it really spicy means that you cna't eat tons (well, that's the idea!)

I have a bag of popcorn kernels I got nearly a year ago. It came with no instructions and no best before date. I am guessing I would just stick this in a pan with some butter and put the lid on and wait for it to all pop? Any tips? :)

    Thanks in advance.

Iuse my pressure cooker pan and lid. Put a knob of butter (about 30g) inot the pan and melt on a low heat. Add popcorn to form a single layer over the bottom. Put the lid on and cook over a medium heat. Keep shaking the pan until the popping stops. pour over warmed golden syrup.

This is how I do it:

Pour a single layer of kernels into a medium size pan while it's still cold. Tip them out again, then put a SMALL amount of oil in the pan - the idea is to stop the corn sticking, not to deep fry it. Heat the oil till it's hot and almost smoking. Chuck the kernels in and put the lid on quickly. Gently shake the pan continuously while the corn pops, and when the corn is done it will fill the pan and probably push the lid off. Turn it into a large heatproof bowl.

It's even easier if you've got a hot air popping machine :D

I heat the pan til its really hot, then add butter (large knob) and salt, then sprinkle in enough popcorn to cover base of pan, turn to med/high and when the popping slows down take it off or the remaining unpopped kernals may burn ;)

They tend to burn less if you use oil but I like the flavour of butter so use both.

I do these for my toddlers but for them I use olive oil and no salt - they love it :)

When my family were young I had a large pyrex plate that fit the top of my large stock pan. We always used this as a lid for the popcorn so they could watch it popping, safely ofcourse.
