"Treats" we can't enjoy anymore
Mrs_Thrift
I've just posted on the May Grocery Challenge thread about how Mr Thrift and I struggled to finish one Chinese takeaway meal between us last weekend, when we used to happily eat one each, and we felt quite ill afterwards, although we did like it at the time. But it certainly wasn't worth the bloated feeling and the shakes I got, so both agreed we wouldn't bother "treating" ourselves with a Chinese takeaway again.
Last night I made an Indian curry and Mr Thrift said that it was better than anything from the takeaway (not sure if I agreed, but I think it was close, even if I say so myself!) so that's another "treat" we won't bother with again.
Another thing I used to love but can;t eat anymore is Crunchy Nut Cornflakes - they're just sooooo sugary, how did I eat them before?!
Are there things that other old stylers used to regard as treats, but don't enjoy anymore since going old style?
Edited to say I'm actually very pleased about this change, and a huge thank you to everyone on old style who's encouraged this change of my ways.
I've found it very encouraging to realise how good my cooking can be compared to takeaways, and will try to keep it in mind whenever I'm tempted to "treat" myself again.

Shoe shopping. It just isn't the same knowing I don't "need" the shoes:rolleyes:
Linking to the "old Adages" thread, I used to say "When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping". Now when the going gets tough & I need a treat I retire to bed in the middle of the day with a (2nd hand) trashy book & a walnut whip!Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p
In England we have Mothering Sunday & Father Christmas, Mothers day & Santa Clause are American merchandising tricks:mad: Demonstrate pride in your heirtage by getting it right please people!0 -

Sweet cerials, like you; much less sugar in my drinks and my diet all together. Off whole milk and on to semi-skimmed, which isn't cheaper but is healthier (I got nagged into that one
) most ready made meals just don't appeal any more. It's not just taste differences - I know what went into mine

Instant hot chocolate drinks...used to love them but now find they are soooo sweet they make my teeth ache.
Anyone know a good way of making a hot chocolate drink that isn't sickly sweet

Proper cocoa powder instead of hot choclate which is a mix and sweetened, as you know. Make the cocoa with milk (or a blend of water and milk, to taste) and then add sugar to taste. Whizz if you like it whizzed. Adding a square of ready made chocolate is forbidden to anyone with a waistline over 4000 mtrs

Wouldn't be surprised that's because of the MSG and other junk they put in as well as loads of salt and sugar, soy sauce etc.Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

Asda's deep pan pepperoni pizza, £1.06. I used to eat one a week as a treat (I think I used to treat myself a lot) but now I just could no way eat one. It just tastes of manufacturedness! I also know it contains a lot of salt and additives probably. I'm planning on making my own homemade pizza this weekend using the breadmaker. A lot cheaper, healthier and hopefully tastier (but you never know with my cooking!)0

:rotfl: well that counts me out then
I use the Fair Trade Cocodirect which is 40% solids and don't bother adding sugar to it, or if I'm feeling very naughty I'll melt some G&B into hot milk
Like Mrs Thrift I've also found I no longer enjoy Chinese or Indian take-aways and get that horrible bloated feeling, as well as being incredibly thirsty afterwards from the salt and MSG content. It's not just me, but my son also says the same and he's much happier eating my HM "healthy" dinners now :T"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

It's quite scary to think how happy I was to munch through all that rubbish before, without getting the shakes, which I guess means I'd got used to it, yuck!
And like you Daisy I much prefer to make my own things from scratch so I know what's going into them. That's been a tough one for me though, as I WAS queen of the jar of sauce, but encouraged by MSE I'm weaning myself off them. I'm now down to using passata instead of "proper" sauces, but that still has salt or sugar in it, so I'm even thinking about making my own! And I also use packets of pre-mixed spice mixes now that you make a paste from, but one that I use has salt in, so that will have to go eventually as well, and I'll make my own mixes up.0 -
Shop bought puddings, they taste artificial, they're expensive and the packaging! dont get me started - there is nothing better than home cooked bread and butter pudding when your in need of comfort food!I've made my debts bite-size too depressing to look at all at once so am handling them one at a time - first up Graduate Loan £1720 paid off! only £280 to go!!!
