Five OS Pleasures in your day today

  • Here are my five for today:

    1) The boys making vases out of cardboard tubes and flowers out of egg box cups for Father's Day (one for DH and one for Grandad). DS2 mixed the paint but came up with some lovely silvery pink and silvery green colours accidentally!
    2) We were able to sort out what was wrong with the washing machine rather than calling out a plumber. Phew :T
    3) Found a fantastic book about life on a farm in a nearby village in the 1920s. Drove through the village today and spotted some of the old farm cottages mentioned in the book.
    4) DS2 jumped in the pool and went under the water for the first time today in his swimming lessons. This was a big hurdle for him.
    5) A lovely chat with my mum on the phone. Always brightens up my day.

Absolutely tired out now, so going to bed. N'night all!

Morning all, for the moment sunny, tempered by a chill-edged breeze.
Just heard weekend weather outlook - not great.
    Shall try and obey '5':o

    1. Admin. !!!!-up sorted - so I won't miss the rest of Barley Roscoe's talks, especially the 2 on Studio Pottery which I am especially excited about. Have missed the first one with ref. to David Jones - a pity.
    2. Will therefore head>France the day after last one,:jknowing I have safely tucked fare in little No-Charge-for-online-bkg a/c. Anticipation of same will be BIG pleasure every day until I go:j.
    3. VG plastering knives reduced @ Mr T from £5 to 11p[last 2>moi>Fr:D]
    4. Gorgeous saffron ditto i.e.reduced[no, not 11p sadly]but 90p for 4 usual measures. I adore it and all that it conjures.
    5. Astuces will now be employed to scrunch remainder into this last one.
Following good call with friend on Bute, cleared work-in-progress rubbish to dump, took rescued linens into OD[I always save/repair/launder good things that would have been 'ragged'], rtnd his wife's shortened linen trousers to our Ops Mgr[looked v. impressed...for a fella:rolleyes:but I knew I had stitched them with special care.] Then salvaged chrome corner pot shelf:jfor plants/candles in the Secret Garden corner and old wardrobe mirror ditto - indiscernible shell chip on one reverse edge - rien! Pleasurable anticipation of how several mirrors will be placed for MAGIC. Fatal detour to the MRU of Homebase Garden area - NZ:DTea Tree[manuka] much, much reduced - so much reduced, in fact, that it has to rtn with me - £3.99 from 24.99. Haere mai! Haere mai! It has been grown in elegant tall pom-pom shape and looks wonderful, with the small dark red flowers and similarly tinted leaves. Quiet smiles as this is the scrub which NZ prisoners were/are? put to clearing as hard labour.
    Noku te whiwhi!
It will live in an old Cambridge RDC dustbin, when the hazelnut in there, now safely established, goes onto back hedge, later today - promise!:rolleyes:and a few other bits that were ailing:o, 2 shrubs unknown, 2 basils[which I never can resist]and poss. alpine things which may start same in old London sink[yes, saved from The Chuck - why do people do this?] Then call on L. as Scotsdales' BOGOF Cream Teas offer ends Sunday. We will go today:Dand I will show her where the Bargain Corner is - still can't work out how it took me 4 visits to discover this. Will be organised, with several pics of thgs I have ??s about and Haworthia? to i.d. - have 20 which were being slung, so have saved and will sell for OD. with little Info cards I will do. Found 2 more troughs, planted out yesterday's Lollo Rosso[20p for 8 savees], heads are up this morning. Will plant the 15 mangetout[love those 20p bargains] before I go. Now going outside, late brekkie again, and will re-string windchimes using[lightbulb moment]split speaker wire - Poundland's 12m reel ,should be durable, not the costly flexiwire that seemed inevitable.

newlywed - Ithink you'd better come and pop your nose into my elderflower champagne bucket - WOW! I've slightly let it get on with itself and am not sure if it's usable now. Shall ask on the e/f recettes Threads, unless someone here:Ahas advice......please?

Have days littered with small OS pleasures.

Even if coming here tonight and reading is the first of them, you know it's guaranteed.

Good Morning :hello: everybody - chilly wind blowing around here today - brrrrr - but the weekend forecast looks a little more promising - do hope so as we will be child-minding for sat/sun (including overnight).

    - well done on getting a clever OH, newlywed - those kind are worth their weight in gold ;)
    - hope you enjoyed your musical entertainment, wednesday
    - busy day, Patchwork - goosegog jam for next year?
    - sorry you've had a rough day, Pooky - but a 'purry cuddle' sounds like a good way to make up - still missing our Tiggy-tiger's purrs :(.
    - :rotfl: at those builders, Primrose! Hope you find a solution to that darn wood pigeon vs your strawbs. Love the sound of your froglets :).
    - well done on your needlework skills for the school play, SunnyGirl, and hope you managed to get your uniform needs in Asda. We're on the lookout for black pleated school skirts but NOT those short 'skater skirts' in Asda - don't want dgd1 (11yrs) arriving at High School looking like a streetwalker!
    - sounds like you and ds had a lovely day, jollymummy.
    - a posh afternoon tea party, how civilised, Caterina! Sorry to hear about your eye problem but :T to the NHS for spotting it and sorting it so quickly.
    - quote from Bella: "....... I think he is finding that it is harder work in my world than he thought." ......... yeah and you don't get to retire, dear! ;)
    - Great news on the washing machine, Blimus - and well done to your kids for their creative efforts :).
    - great bargain finds, ampersand - enjoy your trip to 'belle France' :).

    Mine for yesterday were:

    1. Luckily a quiet day as all were recovering from their exertions in wandering around Blackpool on Wednesday.

    2. Desperate phone call for help from Calamity Jane (DD) - what's new!

    3. Decided to install myself in daughter's house for the afternoon and take my 'work needs' with me so I could deal with any problems from there.

    4. She had found somebody who is interested in possibly buying her house from her but he would be coming today to have a look-see (he worked in the 'Right To Buy Department' when she bought it and assisted her application - has now gone into property development himself). She needed an extra pair of hands for a 'good clean through'.

    5. Just as we had the kitchen sorted, kids were tackling their bedrooms and we had the living room at the 'worse-than-before-we-started-stage' he arrived as he was 'on his way home' -. The House Doctor would have had a canary fit!!! However he IS still interested :j - she is now waiting to see how much he will give them and fingers crossed it's enough to clear the mortgage and loan secured on the property.

    6. Same guy mentioned that he a couple of properties to rent including one in a very quiet street in my home town (which is one place she was considering going to!) about 4-5 miles away. Next move is to check out how much Housing Benefit she would receive if she were to take that property.

    7. Arrived home extremely drained (via chippy with Chow Mein for evening meal!).

    8. Now wondering how long it will be before I'll be needing to move 'back home' again !

    9. Lovely strong breeze going on outside at the moment - time to go hunting for dirty laundry - can't waste good drying weather :D.

Oh well no doubt there'll be a phone call again at some time today.

Hope everybody has a lovely peaceful day with lots of os-ing going on. Speak again later - love Ollie xxx

    Good morning all!

Thanks Ollie for your good wishes about my eye, feeling a lot better today and no longer looking all reddened (and scaring the kids in the street!).

Here are my five for today:

1 - Nice healthy breakfast of porridge oats soaked overnight in oat milk (soaking them makes them so much more digestible), chopped toasted nuts, milled flaxseeds, fresh raspberries, topped with natural yogurt and a shot of maple syrup - it was delicious and very filling!

2 - I have been accepted for the Healthwise scheme, a fitness programme that my GP referred me to. This means that I now have very cheap gym membership (£12 per month instead of £40!) for one year, and then another two years at discounted rates - by which time I shall be 55 and will be able to get the old lady discount anyway! YIPPEE!!!

3 - This afternoon more babysitting is going to bring more cash in - and I am looking forward to the time with the lovely baby.

4 - Because of high usage of my mobile while in Italy I have accumulated bonus minutes for this month, so I have all of 150 minutes, plus another 10 minutes (O2 Surprises) - means I can chat away to all and sundry instead of being careful not to overuse my normal 50 minutes per month!

5 - Planning to take DH to the Selfridges sales tonight, open until 10pm, so plenty of time to look for bargains.

    Love to all

    Caterina
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Good evening from a wet & dark Manchester  :D I hope that everyone is well? My five for today are:

    1. DS2 pronounced tea tonight, a pasta bake with LOTS of hidden veggies in it, to be 'epic' I was so thrilled :T as this is the child who refuses to eat most veg apart from carrots, peas & salad stuff. He actually eats loads more he just doesn't know it ;)

    2. I whizzed into town this morning to go to 4 different shops (all on the same bit) to buy bits & bobs that I would have gone to Asda for before MSE. I reckon to have saved myself £18 - £20 by doing so!

    3. Had a lovely talk on the phone to my Mum earlier. I moaned about all sorts and she just let me bless her. She's coming down tomorrow which will be lovely.

    4. Anticipated pleasure of a bath & nail painting session soon.

    5. DH & I laughing & joking around whilst whizzing round town this morning. It's good as we've been married for 21 yrs this September.

Have a pleasant evening all & ((((hugs)))) where they are needed/wanted.

    1) Picking my luscious crunchy home grown lettuces and herbs

    2) From the old baths we used to grow them in (cheaper than building raised beds!

    3) Staying at home with my son and his granny (I'm a full time mum, so no nursery)

    4) and baking a father's day cake (from the out of date baking stuff in the cupboard - we don't bake cakes very often ;))

    5) Enjoying the smile on Daddy's face as his son proudly showed off his efforts (so many things cost nothing yet are priceless)

Ollie, you're so right, I don't get to retire do I but I must put on record as my number 1 pleasure today,

    1. DH is doing his best to help me so that I can enjoy his retirement too.

    2. Went to a funeral today but as it was a man who died in hope of resurrection to Eternal Life it was not the gloomy occasion it might have been.

    3. Did a normal weekly bake, quite novel after all the excitement of the first week of retirement and the 65th birthday.

    4. Tuna rissotto for tea, easy and cheap.

    5. A nice long talk on the phone to my nearly 90 aunt - so wise.

    Bella.

  • Hi Reverbe! No, I sha'n't be eating slugs thank you. I did try snails in France, but I think it was the sauce I liked.

    1) Getting my hair done. I go to a very basic place that charges half what the others in town ask for the same sort of result. The conversation is lovely and it's a chance to read in peace.
    2) The compost bins arrived at our local hardware shop. I couldn't fit them in the car! Anyway, they cheerfully delivered for free
    3) Harvested some potatoes from the allotment which DS and DD are using when they cook for DH tomorrow
    4) Got my paperwork done. Such a relief.
    5) Lovely bottle of wine for DH from a friend as thanks for the occasional lift. Much appreciated.

And yes, Ollie, there will be jam if at all possible.

    Have a lovely weekend everyone

Hi all from a warm and rain-free Bedfordshire...not a lot of sun again and quite a breeze which dries everything up so quickly, but watering the garden is quite a sociable event with both neighbours doing the same :D

    Friday blessings...

    1. Changing the bed linen in readiness for DM's visit on Sunday. I get to sleep in the newly decorated and furnished 3rd bedroom, I'm quite looking forward to it

    2. Enjoying a slice of freshly baked, still warm hm bread with real butter - it was better than anything shop bought

    3. Going to the tip with 'stuff' from DN's shed and my own, and one of the men there emptying the boot for me. I'd heard not good reports about the staff there but they're all wrong, they're very polite and very helpful. I really think a lot depends on one's attitude to people, be polite and they'll usually respond in kind.

    4. Watching the jasmine come into bloom day by day, it looks as though it's covered in hundreds of little white stars

    5. My young lodger and I having silly moment this evening and telling each other childish jokes - I do like to hear him laugh, he didn't do much of that when he first came to live with me.

Night night all, hugs and blessings to each and every one of you
