  • Congrats to Sparrer! and Happy special days to the others!
    Today:
1 Getting some carrots and garlic from a friend to grow this year (at least that is the idea!)
2 Getting out for a trip into the hills even if the weather looks rather scary now!
3 getting a bag of ys lemons for 60p - some for pancakes and some for HM lemon curd
4 planning a trip to hebden bridge tomorrow - i'm having a little adventure, I've not been there since my parents took my many (ok 20) years ago. My dear dad made me climb a huuuge hill in heptonstall to see Plaths grave (yes he was an odd chap) so i'm off on a bit of a pilgrimage as I really miss him at the mo.
5 Got some great books from our local library -doing some reading to see if I'm brave enough to plunge into my PhD yet - I should really follow the spirit of my signature shouldn't I!

    and an extra one
    6. I'm really pleased to see SGs post about her Dad, it must be a real blessing to have him home!

    gentle hugs to all!

Caterina - you eat my slippers; I'll knit your cake. C'mon gal - RECIPE, please. I'd love to do a good apple cake.

Ok then, I was about to log off but could really not resist to have a knitted cake! Here's the recipe:

4 oz butter (I use Anchor spreadable as it is easy to mix), 4 oz sugar, 4 oz self-raising flour, 2 eggs, 2 small-ish apples, small shot of milk (Or soya milk or orange juice), lemon rind. Sugar to coat top.

Beat butter with sugar and eggs, add a little liquid (couple of tbsps max.). Chop apples and mix them in. Sieve flour into mix and fold in. Grate the rind of a lemon into the mix.

Grease a cake tin, metal is better I think as it distributes the heat more evenly. Pour mix in, then even out with a spatula and cover the top with sugar.

Bake at 180 degrees C until risen and golden and when you put a knife in it the blade should come out almost dry (if no apple, it would come out dry but the apple keeps some moisture in).

    Enjoy!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Caterina - which gives the best results for Apple cake - dessert apples or Bramley cookers? I occasionally end up with lots of apple sauce after doing a Sunday roast pork lunch and wonder whether I could successfully whip in the apple sauce instead of the raw apples?

Well done everybody on your OS pleasures for the day :j and welcome to fayjack :hello:.

Such brilliant news about your dad, sunnygirl ((((hugs)))) - there is soooo much that can be done IF treatment can be got quickly.

    1. Early start today in work - needed to be at one of our offices for a presentation. 100% Attendance Award for 5 years with no sick leave  - £250 in High Street Vouchers - there were 33 of us for this :D. Decided I will treat myself to some shoes from Brantano (they have a good range of size 9's :o) and then put the remainder away towards Christmas presents :D - proper money-saving ;).

    2. Quick top-up visit to Asda this evening. Whoopsied Organic Leg of Pork - down from £9 to £5. Shin Beef (for Scouse) 2 packs (£2.50each) for £4 (saving £1!). Whoopsied Chicken Korma down to £1.

    3. Chilli diced turkey with peppers/mushrooms/courgettes served with pasta for tea this evening - and YES I did get to the remains before OH. They are now sitting in a tub in the freezer where he can't get at them :rotfl:! - will do for jacket pots next week :).

    4. Flying visit to DD and dgk's at tea-time. Found her struggling to make pancakes for the kids. Silly girl had loaned her good non-stick frying pan to a neighbour who now denies ever borrowing it () - just don't ask! - and she was left having to use her copper-bottomed stainless steel one (looks fabulous but carp for cooking anything!). She finally resorted to using the 'griddle' part of her George Foreman thing to make mini-pancakes. Ever resourceful!

    5. My dgd2(age 16mths) has finally made an 'upright move' under her own steam - about flipping time too! She did a couple of steps this evening in front of me - just to prove it. Then she managed to wolf down 3 mini-pancakes - made with soya milk in her case :).

    6. Picked up a couple of 'Mrs Beeton's' paper back cookery books in Asda this evening. £2 each or 2 for £3 - got the Baking one and the Puddings/Desserts. Not quite the same as my good old-fathful one from years gone by, but I'm very happy to have them all the same and such good vfm.

So, all in all, I've had a great day :j and I'm going to bed a Happy Bunny this evening :D.

Hope you've all had similar days and that you are ready for a blessed night's sleep.

Especially for Caterina and ampersand check these out ;) :

I shall sneak in before Sparrer tonight!

Thanks for the knitted slipper recipe(?:D ) Ampersand. I've put it in my useful patterns file.

    My five for today:

    1. Doing a deal with DS2 this morning about helping to get the house a bit more in order. I suggested that I gave him a five minute job to do while I had a rest (his first job was to get dressed!), then he had to give me one while he had a rest. If one of us cracked and refused the job they'd been set, the other one got 45 minutes uninterrupted computer time (his suggestion). He loved it. It was very funny since he kept winding me up about how awful my next job would be. He kept finding me all the horrible things to do that I'd been putting off eg. cleaning out the fridge and moving all the boxes that were blocking easy access on the landing back to their rightful places elsewhere in the house. We kept going turn and turn about for about an hour and a half and got so much done.

    2. Did a trip to the dump to get rid of a big, unrepairable, old chest of drawers - it's made useful space - and recycled some dead electrical equipment.

    3. On the way home, stopping off at Mr S to stock up on basics - our usual organic cheese was on special offer and Quorn burgers were half price so we stocked up on these for the freezer. The veggiebox arrived today and the (newly cleaned) fridge is now very full.

    4. I handed over the pancake making to the children and all I could hear was lots of laughter after supper. Every so often one of them would appear with another pancake for me while I was working at the computer. They used the juice from some of the veggiebox blood oranges instead of lemon and that was very delicious.

    5. A bit more knitting while doing a bit more iplayer catch-up. (Bella - I think that iplayer and the ITV/C4 equivalents can be seen as OS :D - we are on the verge of stopping having a telly because of them.)

    Sweet dreams.

    Morning all -
broomstick, did you not try freecycling your chest of dwrs? Loved your no.1.
Ollie, I'm amazed by those knitty links - why would one make them? for what?
Caterina - such a pity you can't find freecycle topsoil nearer home. It features often around here. The apple cake recipe looks good - have you ever added cinnamon? I might when I try.

1 Still feeling good about insurance - may head to B StE market on bus today, visit gallery. Nick Cave lived there, still has house, I gather....

    2. While hunting for memory card - stil slightly mislaid(The Borrowers:rolleyes: again?) - found old loupe:j :j :j , tool of trade when I hunt/gather:j :j :j . Thought it forever lost months ago.

3.Emptied compost 1/2 hr ago, and stood listening in soft slight drizzle to birdie biz and small life scurries in hedge.

4.Ate 1/2 pineapple and litre water effortlessly done already - roll on gym induction next week.

    5. Made neighbour laugh with saga of SAGA(the new 4-letter word:rolleyes:). Her former Police Inspector husband had major stroke/infarct 16 yrs ago and can be v.difficult, violent and she is warmth, strength, childless.......Rtnd to sweet email from rugbymum's daughter - rm so eager for her Friday CAP appt. - a new beginning.

mot - your no.3 is lovely, the ease of true companionship.

...which I'm zinging your way today too, fay. Did you catch up with your pal? Make enough hobnobs for us all here?
    Morning sparrer:hello: No news is........?

  • Broomstick, I think you're right set against the costs of running a telly, iplayer is certainly MS if not truly OS. Can you please tell me what the ITV/C4 equivalents are, as I have not met them yet.

Well, yesterday did not exactly zing with pleasures. Tuesday is the nearest thing I get to a day off and I often go shopping with DD. Yesterday she was otherwise engaged so I shopped alone. Didn't buy much and certainly no bargains. But I'll try to dig up some pleasures:-

    1. Spent the afternoon making cards and will be even happier if they sell.

    2. Corned beef hash for tea.

    3. The other half of the tin of corned beef for our lunches today.

    4. Finished the back and one front of the cardigan I'm knitting for DGD which I started on Monday.

    5. To bed with a good book and a nice kind DH who doesn't mind me reading as long as he gets to sleep straight away.

There, I did it, they are always there if you look hard enough. Off now to work on today's pleasures. Looks promising:rolleyes:
