VW fiddling emissions data

The VW board need to be locked in a enclosed room with the affected cars, so that they can experience the full benefit of their ultra-clean diesels.
...and criminal proceedings have been launched by the German Gov't0 -

If I was George Osborne, I would just increase the VED Band to match the actual emissions, and pick up lots of extra road tax and Benefit in Kind tax. Cheers, VW!
I expect there will be lots of ECU re-mapping adverts popping up.
If VW re-maps the ECU at the next service, they can report each vehicle to DVLA as "fixed".
The people who feel neutered will just get the ECU mapped again, possibly adding a few bhp to boost the ego, resulting in an even higher NOx output.0 -
some facts:
In the UK we have different emissions requirements for diesel and petrol vehicles. We judge diesels by a different standard than we do a petrol. In the USA the emissions requirements are the same - hence why they drive so much more "gas" cars over there. It's even common to see minivans running on "gas" over there. Here in the UK you'd be bonkers to drive a petrol ford transit swb van.
The cheating involved here is not the ususal cheating everyone else thinks they've owned up to. It's not the usual tape all the panel gaps, remove the alternator, remove one wing mirror that's not legally required to have.
What VW did was have the ECU recognise when the car is being investigated by emissions control and behave differently (probably when the incar GPS is beeping from a stationary location, and the car is doing the same speed in a complete straight line without any steering movement at all).
Obviously the car can't miraculously produe super low emissions while being tested and then have atrociou emissions on "normal" driving. I think they mustve got the DPF to hoard/retain all the harmful exhausts inside it while being tested instead of going through the usual burn cycle.0 -
If all these cars have been releasing more emissions why hasn't pollution monitoring picked this up?

They simply set up the engine to produce super low NOx emissions. Easy to do.
The engine power would have been dialled back as a result - you would not have been able to drive it in that configuration.
It was the reverse of a trick used by a truck company some years before, which produced lower NOx and less power but increased both as you drove.0 -
I expect some official announcements soon - but colleagues from at least one major automotive brand have already been told that they're squeaky clean. They've also been told to expect some impact / backlash - even though they aren't involved, because of the seriousness of this global deception.
Suspicion is everyone in the industry is going to be tarred with the same, erm, exhaust...0 -

as soon as i read that first line and saw the poster i didnt read any further0 -
Can someone in the motor trade please explain something to me.
I have a VW Polo S 1.2 60 PS petrol. Purchased it brand new in Feb 2012. Had its first MOT in Jan this year which was done by VW as part of the 3 year free servicing deal.
It failed the MOT on emissions. It had just 4000 miles on the clock. The exhaust centre clamp was leaking which needed repair (£47.54) and it needed fuel treatment (£29.99).
A few people have said they cannot understand why a new car with low mileage can fail on emissions? I really do not understand emissions so could someone please explain or have I been conned by VW?
ThanksThe best things in life are free.....0 -

You'd a leaking exhaust which affected the emissions reading and they stuck in a fuel treatment to make a few extra ££
Nothing to do with VW conning you0
