VW fiddling emissions data

I got the Golf R Line instead of the Golf R simply based on the fact that I hate spending money opted for the R Line which offers a more economical engine but even with my careful driving I still can't get the advertised MPG out of it - even when driving it in 'Eco' mode.

What should I be looking for within the contract? I simply want shut of the Golf as I only suspect this is going to get very sticky with VW. As for which car next- I don't know. I hadn't thought that far ahead yet!
The European test requires you to accelerate from zero to 31mph no faster than in about half a minute. If you do that on the road - and the outside air temperture is 25 degrees - on a flat surface - you will get the advertised MPG. Your tyres may need to be a little over-inflated for that bit, and you might want to tape down the doors with gaffer tape. That bit is without question.

The point is all manufacturers do the same. The test is no more representative of real life than any other product certifications, which are developed by the particular industry not to make products better or safer but to come up with tests which put competitors at a disadvantage.

It is unlikely your contract gives you any option to return the car. The mileage, as they say, may vary.
  • Thanks for your reply. But surely, given that Volkswagen have sold a vehicle that isn't to its emissions that it claims to be, I've therefore been mis-sold the contract? Volkswagen have messed up big this time and I'm sure I'm not the only person who is just wanting out of their contact/seeking compensation for this... I'm not seeking compensation, I just want to get gone of the contract. Volkswagen have lost my trust.

What am I best doing? Consulting a solicitor, phoning Volkswagen Finance and tell them that I want to terminate the contract due to being mis-sold or just wait and see?

How are the (possible) increased emissions impacting on you?
Do you really think at this point its remotely smart to start legal proceedings?
If it were me,I would be doing nothing at this point.

It's not just the increased emissions though. It's the moral that they've lied, its fraudulent. Plus when they are found to have cheated the EU emissions too, it means George Osborne will increase the tax, the re-sale of my car will be much much less too and where's to say that something else won't go wrong? Volkswagen have lied to us once now, doesn't mean they're not hiding something else.

    I want out.

    Well lets split your 'issues'.
Are you willing to suffer financially for morals?
If so then no worries. Go wild with legal avenues.
If not then hold off and see where your contract positions you for a start.
I'll agree on potential resale issues.
However,I always thought it was assumed most emissions/economy data was unachievable in the real world.

Plenty of other examples of "errors" (including fiddling the mpg figures) have resulted in no detectable change in resale values. Albeit not on this scale.

Truthfully, though, buying a conventional car powered by an Internal Combustion Engine fuelled solely by fossils was never going to be a long term plan.

If emissions / economy were that important - the GTE or equivalent would have been the better option.

BIB, you mean VED (AKA Car Tax)? The tax that you are saving money on because of VW's actions that probably put it in a lower band.

And where are you getting the idea that vehicles already on the road will be re-banded? As far as I'm aware there is no precedent for that ever happening.

Maybe compensation for we petrol car owners who have had to breathe in all those nitrogen oxide fumes and particulates emitted by lowly taxed diesel cars? Could be the next big PPI.

    and lawyers get rich

who pays in the long run, the motorist!
  • I wonder how many Volkswagen's have been hidden away in the garage or left unwashed this weekend. No more Sunday afternoon bragging rights.

I wonder how many people bought their cars based upon the marketing.

Reminds me of something said by a family member over ten years ago. "Oh the test drive? Well, yes, the Citroen drove much better, and had more equipment, and was a lot cheaper. But we went for the Volkswagen in the end. Because it's a Volkswagen".
