    It reports that lead-footed Germans are consuming up to 50% more fuel than lab tests. Said Hans Gottelmeyer "Traveling at no more than one hundred and fifty five of your miles per hour, we struggled to match the test results in our four litre diesel Mercedes".

    Interestingly, Which? measured a gap of just 12%. Which, given the state of the M6 and the M1 is hardly surprising.

    Proper emissions testing for diesel cars at MOT time would have prevented all this. Required for petrol cars after all.

    Always been a complaint that there is no proper testing i.e. people can remove DPFs and EGRs at will and the MoT test won't pick it up.

    How practical such a test would be I don't know - just revving the nuts off a diesel under zero load may not be representative. Could be expensive kitting out MoT bays with full dyno gear.

    I did read this week that emission controls in the US are required to work up to 120,000 or 150,000 miles depending on the vehicle. I believe that means all such equipment must have a warranty at least that long - a much better situation than over here.

    Is it possible that affected cars will be reclassified for either VED and/or BIK tax on company cars? Ie increasing peoples' tax costs?

    The UK Gov't has already said that any loss in tax revenue will likely be paid for by VW and not the user.

    1.2m vehicles are affected in the UK:
    • VW PC 508,276
    • Audi 393,450
    • Seat 76,773
    • Skoda 131,569
    • VW CV 79,838
    • Total 1,189,906

    Passenger cars i.e. cars
    Commercial vehicles i.e. not cars
  • I bought an Audi this year. It flies and uses b-ugger all diesel. I won't need an MOT for 3 years so my car won't be going anywhere near a recall; I don't want a de-tuned, thirsty lump of dead metal thanks. I'd rather keep all the mid range grunt ta :p.

    I will of course be leeching for any compo that might be dished out. What's that you say about the environment? Yeah, well when Asia stops polluting the Planet, I'll listen :D.


    So your not going to get it serviced either? If you want to protect the planet you need a tax exempt V8 Range Rover. Must be good for the enviroment because its free tax.

    That Title will upset the Green Brigade, but it is true.

    Take 2 cars, same body/chassis, same spec's except for one having a smaller - capacity engine. At the same speed, on level ground, the smaller engine has slightly higher RPM. This changes when driving uphill, the larger engine has considerably less RPM, because it does not have to work as hard as the small engine, to maintain the same momentum. It is therefore an inescapable fact, that the smaller engine is always creating more emissions, and thus more pollution.

    And yet the motor industry continues to try to make the motoring public believe that a smaller engine is best, by adding complicated electronic devices and controls. At the end of the day, none of it works to escape the fact that the larger engine creates less emissions and can be more economical, than the smaller. This is done of course, to escape VED.
    I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
