I paid and now they want more money

edited 20 September 2015 at 7:04PM in Parking tickets, fines & parking
My husband pulled up for a moment to let my sister in law out at John Lennon airport, got out to help her with her bag and so we were fined for parking illegally.

I dithered whether to pay or not and when I got back from holiday I paid.

Now I have a letter from a debt collector to say I didn;t pay within the given time and so I am going to be charged £100.

I feel quite afraid in case they knock at my door when my hubby isn't here.

The charge was in my maiden name, I've changed it six years ago so it isn;t even the right name on the letter and I'm about to sell the car in question....

What do I do?

Is this going to leave my on some black list somewhere? It is so unfair because I actually paid and I thought it was in the time given.

This happens quite a lot - Don't mistake PPCs for legit/reasonable companies. All they want is money and preferably more money out of you.

Start by having a good and careful read of the Newbies Sticky at the top of the forums. That should give you an idea of your options for now and I would think that a stinking complaint to the JLA management would be your first option. :)

Unfortunately you paid them, they now have you marked down as a mug who will panic and pay up some more.
I dithered whether to pay or not and when I got back from holiday I paid.
your big mistake was to pay them, why?
Your only option now to get your money back would be a strong complaint to the airport company, combined with something along the lines of unless their agents stop harassing you, you will/may bill the airport for your time.

If you receive a bill or anything even if it looks like a fine, penalty or anything else never ever pay up, always question everything, only pay up when you are 100% and more convinced that the charge is legitimate, somethings are legitimate, some things aren't.
Private parking charges are almost always illegitimate ( except for the normal fees you may pay such as £1/hour to park )
We ( well most people) have this thing called the internet piped to our homes/phones/whatever and its great for research.

Whats done is done, do not even think of paying DRP /VCS /Simon Renshaw-Smith anything read the sticky thread on this forum, and aim everything at the airport as that will/may be the only chance of getting your money back, you need to cause as much aggro as possible to the airport in relation to this.

Read the sticky, understand the situation, take your anger out ( dont do anything daft ) on JLA , heres the facebook page for starters

    from the facebook page....

Competition time! Tell us why you deserve a holiday and be in with the chance to win two free return tickets on an Aer Lingus flight from LJLA!
I deserve a holiday because ive been under an enormous amount of stress after being conned out of £xxx, caused by an unlawful penalty charge made by a company called VCS, operating at JLA unfortunately i thought this was a real penalty, now i know its a fake charge pretending to be a real fine, as a result of JLA's lack of due diligence in allowing VCS to operate on its land I' am now substantially out of pocket

We're making some exciting changes to our airport... Including upgrading our toilets. Hurray! Take a look at our plans & where the temporary facilities are located before you fly.
Its about time you upgraded your road system, and did away with Simon-Renshaw Smiths VCS acting as your agents, I have just been conned by them into paying £xxx a charge for which they have no lawful entitlement to, please flush the management of VCS, and whoever took it/them on down your new toilets.
I expect you to re-fund me what i have been conned into paying

Nice to see the VLM Fokker 50 back at Liverpool Airport today
Why not tell VCS to Fok off and stop harassing airport users with their fake fines? how many people have fallen victim to their charges, and when are you going to re-fund them?
Who's off to visit those cheeky elves this Christmas with Santa's Lapland?
Why not check out some optional activities available to make the most of your families magical adventure!
Nothing magical about having a company of such poor repute as VCS operating at your site, If possible can we nominate your facilities management and VCS/Simon Renshaw-Smith to miss out on presents from Santa.
Ripping off customers/airport users with fake fines would defiantly be worthy of going on the naughty list

They are not going to knock on your door nor are you going to be put on any kind of credit blacklist.

This can only happen if you are taken to court, lose the court case then don't pay up when ordered to by a court.

VCS don't take JLA cases to court. Have a search of the forum using JLA and byelaws as a search term and find out why.

And what name is on the cars V5 (AKA the Log Book)?

Brilliant post Half_way. Must be in line for 'Post of the Year' Award. Had me chuckling.

@OP. If you haven't updated the DVLA via the V5C of your change of name, you will always get stuff (like your VED reminder, PPC PCNs and council penalty charge notices ) in that name.

Updating your driver licence details is not enough (there's no cross-over data exchange) and failure to update your V5C details can lead to fines (although I'm not sure if fines are applicable to failure to notify change of surname).
Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .

I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

  • I thought it was a bit odd because DVLA know all my new details so I wondered where they had the old name from.

They are on very dodgy ground at JLA and cannot go to court lest the house of cards comes tumbling down.

Write to Trading Standards, com[plain like mad to the Tourst Coard, the Chamber of Commerce/BBB, whoever overseas standards at British airports, the local papers and radion stations, cost them as much trouble as you can.

You will never get your money back, but see that SRS does not spend it on yacht varnish.
You never know how far you can go until you go too far.

Since it is perfectly legal to use both I can't see how they can fine you for using one of your names.

Moragg .... sadly as every one has said ........ you are very unlikely to get your money back ......

you can however cause them untold grief ..... that might just make you feel a little batter ........

below is a post I normally reply with when people post

' I stopped to pick up / drop off at 'the unfriendly Liverpool Airport '
    =============================================
    my thoughts .......
The scammers that infest some of the smaller airports are in cahoots with said airports as its is a (allegedly) mutual financial arrangement ....

Go back a year or two and you would win this at a POPLA appeal ..... however in the world of PPC's they can create another trade body (the IPC) that have a (again allegedly) kangaroo court  (the IAS) The IAS seem to treat appeals as a lottery 80%+ loose irrespective of the evidence.......

you therefore can (after reading the below) choose to follow the forum advice ,and ignore .... or in IMHO do the appeals as a paper trail.

VCS did try out their first small claims court case over such ....and as predict that they pulled out before the trial ..... . They did not dare try placing this before a real judge! and have not yet tried again ..... I wounder why ? ;)

Please do not let this put you off ..... read through some of the below for background information ....
