I know it can be annoying but at the end of the day they're out there trying to make a living, I used to do the same on the phone and my hubby does the doors. I know they can be a pain but they're on comission.
I'm not saying you were but a lot of people can be rude and he might've just had a bad day.
Sorry you've had a bad experience but just remeber he's trying to make money :)

well, he should find another way to "earn money". One which does not involve turning up on someone's doorstep uninvited (the same goes for cold calling people on the phone as well)!
  • And many people at home are trying to have what's left of there precious time at home with their families. They want to relax or catch up on housework not have to answer phone/door only to be greeted with a cold caller

Find another line of business one that doesn't involve disturbing people at home

I find with any sort of home improvement cold caller the magic phrase "It's rented" gets rid of them in seconds. I do in fact own my home but somehow I don't feel any guilt about lying to these people.

This really does work - works with people selling double glazing by cold calling on the phone as well (useally the ones who say they or they're company spoke to you 12 Months previously, when they didn't).

That's the good thing about having a peep hole in your door - you can decide whether to open it or not when you see it's one of these sellers standing there :D

There's nothing inherently wrong with cold callers (phone or door)....... they are just earning their crust.

But I don't like when they won't take no for an answer, that is when they cross the line. Jehovah's Witnesses, I'm talking about you!

So glad I can switch my intercom off. Probably won't stop people (although, I've only know another tenant and the police to do this) knocking on the windo though.

I had a guy knock on my door the other day.

He was one of those 'Hi. You're my best friend' kind of guys which immediately puts my back up.

He said 'You've had your windows done, so what's next?'
    I said 'nothing'.
    'How about a conservatory?'
    'I don't want one'.
    'Doors?'
'Done at the same time as the windows'.
    Soffits & fascias?.
    'No'
'Well, can I arrange for a quote that will guarantee the price?'
'No. Because I would want 'knobbly bits' (these are corbels, sort of Georgian style) and last time I had loads of sales people assure me that 'yes, of course we can fit them' until the bloke doing the quote turned up and said 'actually, we can't' thus wasting both our times'

He just huffed, turned and walked off without another word.

So who was the rude one there?
Next time, he'll get a 'Beat it, chum'.

I agree with this, but I have had ones still using their selling patter as I am closing the door, and after I have politely said that I am not interested.

The problem is that people have generally had enough of trying to politely decline the offers of double glazing, tree removal, accident compensation or whatever, only for the aggravating git who has called uninvited to continue their pitch.

If politely declining doesn't work then I will suggest that the caller chooses whether to get off my property with or without the assistance of my toe end.

  • I knew by posting I would get a lot of negative comments, it's quite funny that people say he should get a "proper job" well actually he does really well at his job.

People say about spending time with their families etc my hubby works 6 days a week until it's dark outside to proviode for HIS family so next time you're horrible to that canvasser on your door just remeber he is just trying to make a living.

I totally understand they can be a pain in the backside and to be completely honest when I get these PPI, acident, loans etc etc ring me up I politely tell them where to shove it.

I must admit some canvassers are not taught to canvass very well and just end up peeing people off. BUT if they're taught right they are good at their job and will not pee people off. If you don't want to talk to them because you're "cooking your tea" or "spending time with your family" then don't answer the door!!
