I learned budgetting very early, age 10 when I went to boarding school. Needs must as Bank of mum and dad were in another country, but I still thought my 20p a week made me absolutely loaded. 3p bags of crisps anyone? - now that really does show my age.
Sibling was even worse than me and is the only person I know who not only avoided the student overdraft but actually managed to save money from his student grant. (Mine went on the obligatory beer and fags.)

  • I'm awful with money, always have been.
I've been on a debt management plan for a few years now and have 2 more payments to make until I am debt free, roll on April!! That will be the first time I haven't owed money in 15 years (apart from student loan).

Moving house is going to set us back a little bit due to the deposit etc, unless anyone has any suggestions on how I make £1500 in 17 days?

Oohh.... I see a project coming on....

Yes of course they would, people don't just get bored from 9-5.

As I said, I can remove the post if people feel strongly about it. But I also feel strongly that the benefit of this thread shouldn't be abused by people just looking for entertainment.

Looking at it another way, if a person were to post on here just for entertainment, it could perhaps be said that they have a problem which we could help them with? Maybe a self-esteem problem? Or a lack of confidence problem? We're always ready to help people with problems like those.

Half day for me today as I have to see the practice nurse at my GP to have my dressings off and stitches out today, though most of the dressings on my neck have fallen off already and one of the stitches randomly fell out onto my lap last night :rotfl:

I am now picturing you with a row of stitches round the neck and a bolt going through your head. And quotes from Young Frankenstein going round my brain,..........sorry Ono. You appear to be a fast healer though, which is a good thing.
I am working from home today. And am finding focussing a little difficult - can you tell?
Tea, I'd go with the try something little so you feel like you've achieved something as well.

  • tea, I'm not sure what your comment refers to as we have just been joined by a new person who hasn't got any previous posts - have I misunderstood?

I love that you are protective of this thread and the lovely atmosphere here, though :) xxxxx

I have just had a long conversation with an in-law which involved suggesting to them that the close relative they are married to is being emotionally and psychologically abusive. They do not disagree but hadn't wanted to admit it to themselves. I love my relative and now feel bad for being disloyal, and useless because I can't see what I can do to help. If I try to talk to my relative I know they will cut me off completely. I want to be there for both of them but am not sure that's possible if things go pear-shaped.
    Help.

  • hmmm. What jumps to mind is that maybe your in-law should talk to an independent person who can help them unpick the situation? Then not only will they get a(nother) disinterested view, but it would help you feel supported that someone else outside the family thought the same thing (or brought another and hopefully constructive view to the situation.)

Advocate? Counsellor? Vicar? Post on a forum?

Elsien - don't feel bad - you have done nothing wrong but tell the truth and have a conversation about it. The person who should be feeling bad is the relative who is being abusive to their partner and it is most compassionate of you to still care for said relative when they are treating your in-law in such a way. Is there a reason you feel loyal to relative for anything other than the fact they are a blood relative?
