How about we run them side by side? For those doing both, if they don't spend the full amount on the weeks budget, they could add it to the £1000 challenge? I know it wouldn't strictly be money from nothing then, but it does add to the temptation not to spend as much!
I'm up for both in whichever way we do them - I need to spend as little as humanly possible next year!!**"Cheer up, it could get worse" - I cheered up, and look, it got worse!**0 -
I'm up for any challenges...£1000 from nothing sounds good! Maybe start selling my recipes to fellow students?
lol, just kidding (maybe? :rotfl:) - but thanks to everyone who thought my post was useful! And thanks for the lasagna suggestion, pixiedust - I KNEW I left out something, but couldn't think what it was.
A grocery challenge would be a good idea, too. I know there's already a topic on Eating for £10 or whatever it is, but why not? I personally like to do things differently - I make a lot of things in advance and freeze them rather than getting fresh ingredients. That's partly because our Fridge never seemed to work right...I'd go and get my milk in the morning and be greeted by a nice puddle on the floor! :mad:0 -
ooh pixie that would be helpful if we could add any money we save from a grocery budget to our £1000? and me too - i'm up for any and all challenges!
it'd be really useful if we all had a similar budget too cuz then it would be easier to not overspend on my grocery stuff etc

ooh and back to the phone thing, thanks for everyone who gave me some help! i went to carphone warehouse shop today to talk about how on the phone they didn't give me a good deal, and they reckon it was actually o2 that must've rung me. anyway long story short, i got the 100 mins and 1000 txts for £20 (inc VAT) and i got £20 put on my card for trading in my old old old old nokia phone! so i'm very happy
that £20 will pay off my final o2 bill in a way too. also, i got £50 from unipol because my housemate argued the damp in our house was an environmental health hazard - YES!!! (i've not even lived in my house yet, so it's good to get some more money back from the rent, even if it was half-rent over summer!)
i was thinking, when we get money back like this, could i add it to the £1000 thing? i'm excited to get started on that!0 -
I reckon adding it to the £1000 challenge is a good idea - it'll stop you spending it until you get to that nice big number!!**"Cheer up, it could get worse" - I cheered up, and look, it got worse!**0

hehehe
so how is the best way to keep track of your £1000 savings? separate account? write down what i save? i think if we all start at the same/similar time too?

Well, I've got an online savings account that runs alongside my current account, so I think I might use that - makes it harder for me to try to spend it! Was thinking about setting up a spreadsheet so I can keep track of where the money comes from as well.
Yesterday would have been a good start (1st of the month), but seeing as we missed it, how about working out when registration is and starting from then? My registration is 17/09**"Cheer up, it could get worse" - I cheered up, and look, it got worse!**0 -
Hi Pixie
Registration date would be a good start date! We could set up a "weekly" type thing and you just start the week that you register. I have 12 weeks per semester.
Also, I am on the Christmas thread too, and this can be a tricky time for students too so we could all start thinking about this too.
Anyway, I digress...I got food in my belly and a license for my telly
And nothing's going to bring me down0
