  • Thanks for the nice messages ames123 and Freebie_junkie, I'm feeling a bit more positive today so I have a good recipe if anyone's interested. :p

What I really like to do is make Bolognese sauce, usually with Turkey Mince, but you can easily substitute beef or Soya/Quorn Mince. I tend to use these ingredients if I'm shopping at Tesco:

    1 pack Turkey Mince - £1.30
    1/3 Pack Value Mushrooms - £1.36
    2 or 3 Value Carrots - £0.99
    2 tins Value Tomatoes - £0.15 each, £0.30
1 tin Value Kidney Beans - £0.14 each
    2 or 3 Value White Onions - £0.80

    Plus store cupboard essentials:
Lea + Perrins Sauce (No I will not try to spell out the full name! :rotfl:)
Dried Soya Mince (I use FUDCO Mince - about £2 for a really big bag)
    Black pepper
Garlic (SOOD'S Chopped Garlic in a jar from Home Bargains is a lifesaver!)
Gravy Browning (for colour - Turkey Mince doesn't brown as much as Beef)
    Cooking Oil

    1) Peel the carrots and onions. Chop the mushrooms and other veg into small pieces, add the lea + perrins and pepper, then fry with the mince in a little cooking oil until the mince is just about done.

    2) Drain and rinse the Kidney Beans and add to the pan with the tomatoes. Bring to the boil and simmer for about 20-25mins.

    3) Stir in enough dry soy mince to soak up excess sauce.

I think my last batch made about 6-8 portions, and you can use it in lots of ways:

    - Just plain Spag Bol
    - Cover with mash for Shepherd's Pie
    - Eat with chips! A delicacy in my dad's home town of Widnes and great comfort food ;)
    - Or add a packet of Chilli Con Carne Mix (76p) and eat with Rice, in a Baked Potato, or make a Burrito with a Tortilla wrap

And since there's probably a lot of Value Veg left over, you can make Mushroom Soup!

Just peel and/or chop into small pieces:
    2 or 3 Value Carrots
2 or 3 Value White Onions
    Rest of Value Mushrooms
    A Potato or two

    1) Fry veg in the bottom on a big saucepan with a bit of oil or butter until the onion's cooked.

    2) Cover with water, add a vegetable stock cube, a bit of Salt, and plenty of black pepper. Bring to the boil.

    3) Simmer for about 25 mins (or until the potato pieces are soft) and blend.

This'll make you about 4-6 portions of soup. That means you can get up to 14 meals from ingredients costing £4.89 (a bit more if you make Chilli con Carne), or just under 35p per meal!
Sorry for the length, but not bad value, eh?
  • And if you get bored of bolognese, you can also make it into a lasagna with some white sauce.... And just as soon as I can find the ingredients/recipe, I'll share!!

Have to say as a start -My £10 investment in the NUS card has paid off this last year with loads of discounts everywhere and the ISIC thing works in Amsterdam and Spain as well so I've had a fair few discounts at museums and Zoos etc abroad - even as a mature student:rotfl:

Yeah - There are some places that check - i know Rymans always enter the number into the till. The extra one has the ISIC discounts on which is good if y travel - Yiu can also get cheaper flights and stuff at STA travel with it apparently.
