Now they are on the verge of launching Apple Pay that's even better news; I believe places like Boots, The Co-Op, M&S (as well as Waitrose) don't have the £30 limit in place but my local Morrison's does.
I guess you're referring to paying by Apple Pay, but everything I read seems to say there's the same limits in place as for 'normal' contactless.

If Apple Pay did change their limit, quite likely it would cease to count for the TSB's 5% anyway?

One of the beauties of Apple Pay is that its authentication is better than chip and PIN authorisation. There is therefore no need for the card providers to impose a limit (other than the overall card / account limit). There is no such thing as an "Apple Pay limit", and there is no inherent connection between the limit on contactless cards and the amounts you can pay for with Apple Pay.

The only reason why we still have limits on Apple Pay is that all the contactless terminals do need to be upgraded to allow for higher amounts with Apple Pay. This is taking some time as we are talking millions of devices, and not all of them will be upgraded at the same time.

As 20aday mentioned, people have been reporting for a while that they have been paying, in UK shops, with their iPhone / Apple watch for higher than £30. Apple Pay can also be used on some internet sites (e.g. airlines) to pay a lot more than £30.

That theory is not supported by the TSB cashback T&Cs. As above, it isn't Apple Pay which imposes a limit.

Sorry I was referring to Apple Pay; standard contactless transactions are imposed by the current £30 limit (where the terminal has been upgraded).

It's not money saving by a long stretch but I have first hand experience of Apple Pay taking place above the £30 limit when I paid for my Apple Watch in an Apple Store using my iPhone..

I'd hazard a guess there's no real upper limit on Apple Pay because it's 'secured' using biometrics.

Is anyone else finding that there are certain places that always seem to have problems with contactless, yet others are always fine?

I have never had a problem with Aldi in Reading or Fareham, yet my local BP never seems to work if I'm served by the terminal on the right (yet the one on the left seems fine - sods law I mainly seem to end up on the one of the right and it would look a bit odd if I decided to wait for the one on the left!). This happened again this morning, but the woman serving me said it worked for most people.

This is starting to wind me up, as whenever I go in I'm never sure if contactless will work. First-world problem, of course, but annoying nonetheless!

I don't know how many of their customers keep a 2000 balance and have balance alerts to top it back up when the transactions go out, but it can't be worth 5% to them. I noticed that one of my text alerts didn't arrive so I lost a couple of days interest as I didn't keep on top of it.

I noticed the suggestion to try text alerts on here to know when the balance goes below £2,000 but never seen to receive any.

Can you say what settings you have used and what time of day you receive the alerts?

    Thanks
    Sunil
  • Upper balance £2001 - Lower balance £1999 are the settings I use. The upper balance is a reminder to skim off the monthly interest payments. The texts telling me that the lower balance has been reached arrive on my phone roughly at 08.10 am although the time of the actual reduction in the balance is timed earlier at 05.06 am. I also have a text alert for a weekly balance check which includes the last 6 transactions - this arrives on my phone just after midday and reassures me everything is OK and saves me the bother of having to log on to my account.

Same here. I have two TSB plus accoutn woth two contactless Debitcard. It is very frustrating to se that it does not work most of the time.

Initially I thought the card is faulty. But I have asked the replacement card, but it is still the same story, it is still very unreliable. It is still not working most of time.

Other people could probably share their personal experience

I had replacement cards sent but same issues still occur in that need to enter pin every few transactions.

From my experience of having used contactless debit and credit cards from various other mainstream banks, they have only ever asked me to input my pin the very first time I attempted to do a contactless transaction and never since. So requesting a pin every 3 or so transactions like TSB do for me seems a massive outlier and the cynical part of me might suggest it is to make it more difficult to get the 5% cashback....
