After a couple of weeks without problems, I went into an Aldi today and split my purchases as over £20.00.
The first transaction failed so I used my PIN expecting this to reset for the second transaction.
The second transaction also failed and I had to PIN this too.
There seems to be no logic to rejections.

My contactless TSB debit card had been working fine for the last couple of weeks, I tried it in BP yesterday, nothing at all, no reject or message just no response from it. Can mine also be another one of the mysteriously failing cards? If I was of a cynical nature, one may think its a ploy by TSB to make it difficult to achieve the full £100 spend for 5% cashback.

Coop and Wilkinsons are the only companies that have accepted my contactless card on every occasion other companies (Morrisons/Shell/Fast Food/Pubs, have had a few occasions where they have not accepted or asked me to enter pin number.

£75 spent this month, hoping I can get another £25 before the end of the month.

I don't know exactly how it works or why your first transaction failed, but I would expect the second one to. Split transactions shouldn't be permitted as it defeats the whole purpose of the cap.

If you can just split transactions and keep swiping then potentially someone could steal your card and go buy a new TV by splitting it into £30 chunks. If someone attempts to put through multiple contactless transactions at the same retailer only seconds apart, I would fully expect the bank to intervene and request a PIN.

Also, the contactless limit is now £30, not £20.

First of all Aldi's contactless limit is still £20 per transaction but this is expected to be increased to £30 by the end of Oct 2015.

    See here:
    http://www.theukcardsassociation.org.uk/Contactless_(our_views)/index.asp

"Another important step during 2014 has been the agreement of a higher contactless limit – moving from the current £20 to £30. This change will be rolled out across retailers between 1 September and 31 October 2015"

Secondly I have made several split purchases in Aldi ( and Morrisons ) without any problems.

Also if you look at this post by colsten, you will see he/she also made multiple contactless purchases without problems.

Like I did last month, I bought 8 x £25 vouchers at Waitrose today, to make £100 on each card. All paid for with my two contactless cards that I had not used since I bought last month's vouchers. No problems at all.

    I didn't know that, apologies.

I'm not disputing that you have. I'm saying that you shouldn't be able to, as it defeats the whole purpose of having a cap.

I would be livid with my bank if someone got hold of my card and were able to spend over the £30 cap on it by performing split transactions with the same retailer. I know I'd get the money back in the end but it could still mess me up in the short term and it's not the point. I was only suggesting that trying to do split transactions may be what's causing the PIN requests.

If it's not the reason and split transactions are happening and not being stopped than why have a cap at all? Let's just let people buy TVs by waving a card in the air!

I would hope TV's cost more then £25, the split transactions mentioned above are complete transactions for under the amount, not a higher value paid by multiple swipes of the card....

I too have bought gift cards in three separate transactions, this is a normal practice as you could be doing shopping for someone else and want a separate receipt for the shopping, fairly plausible.

If my TSB contactless fails to go through, I use a credit card. There's no point paying with a debit card if there is no incentive.

IIRC, it's £30 already in Aldi.

There is a point, if the use of a PIN resets the card for the next contactless use.
Many people on this thread have suggested that a PIN may be requested occasionally to prove you own the card.
    But there's uncertainty on this.
