Yes but it doesn't work well for contactless if the slot is used thus defeating the object of the exercise, to get CB.
You seem to be having problems comprehending the situation being described, so for the sake of clarity, here is the scenario again...

I have had several failures and have never asked to have the transaction cancelled but just stick another card in - no problems at all.

Step 1: TSB card is held over contactless terminal, but contactless payment fails
Step 2: Different card is pulled out and put in the slot

There is some speculation that a failed contactless payment that reverts to PIN verified will still qualify for cashback, but it remains to be seen if that is actually the case. In any case, use of the slot after a failed contactless transaction will not be the reason for the failure because the failure happened before the card was inserted.
  • I took molerats comment to mean he used another TSB card to use contactless if one TSB card failed, then no need to use the slot and no potential missing out on any cashback.

That's what I do anyway and it works for me.

For the sake of clarity I use one TSB card and if refused as a contactless payment then I don't put another card in the slot, I take another TSB account card and try that for contactless and so far it has always worked, second time lucky no need to use the slot for chip and pin, cashback obtained.

Note your point re the possibility that CB may still be earned after a failed contactless transaction, will wait and see as that would apply to some of my earlier transactions!

Had two failed contactless payments over the last couple of days - branch told me to wipe the chip. No idea if that makes a difference but it worked for the next couple of transactions. Silly how annoyed I am about the 90p cashback I have lost - can't see failed transactions working as the receipts only state 'contactless' if it works.

I've used Tsb contactless at one store where it works like a shot every time. At three other retailers I might as well wave a cream cracker at the terminal.
V annoying, this is 2015, we're meant to be on hoover boards by now.

If we were, then we'd all be cleaning up :rotfl:
  • Apologies, typo.

Hoover would never admit me to their board of directors ;-

I am going to try using another of my TSB cards if i get a failed card.I have been using another TSB card and asking the cashies to cancel the transaction and i get a declined receipt.I shall just use another TSB card without cancelling the transaction. Thanks to molerats for the help.I will try it.
  • Do you get the cashback if when using a contactless terminal, you tap it then it asks you to put your PIN in?

TSB said no via their twitter account (after initially saying yes...).
  • Today 3 different TSB cards failed to pay contactless :-(
They have been used already last time and worked all right, and not nothing... The helpdesk said that the cards shouldn't touch each other when stored in the wallet, can this be the reason?

After having a few transactions go to PIN verification, I've been thinking about this. The best strategy of course with the contactless debit card is to ensure that there are enough PIN transactions occurring so that the contactless transaction goes through. Does the hivemind know which transactions count as verification for this purposes? A few possibilities, some previously mentioned:

    - PIN usage on online banking card reader (this would be really good if it worked)
    - Cash Machine PIN change (masonic's experience suggests this might not work)
    - Cash Machine Withdrawal (badger09's had positive experience here)
    - Offline card purchase
    - Online card purchase

My intuition is that an online card purchase should work, but I don't know about offline. I hadn't thought about the cash machine option before, this is a nice option.

Do we know what the triggers are for verification? An 'online' contactless transaction can be triggered by whatever back office logic the bank choose, of course. But there might be some policies for 'offline' contactless transactions (transaction count, offline limit).

Although then we need to know whether terminals are offline or not. Sometimes this is obvious (e.g. when a tap is instant, but with a PIN you wait for the slow phoneline system to fire off), other places less so. So maybe it's not worth worrying about.
