Gift cards should be a relatively easy way to quickly spend £100 on the TSB contactless cards, and not to have keep track of odd amounts all month long. Waitrose, John Lewis, M&S and Boots all accept contactless payments for gift cards. You can then use the gift cards to pay for your shopping - or with Xmas (sorry!) coming up, gift cards might make good presents.

There is nothing in the TSB cashback terms that excludes the purchase of gift cards. The benefit of the TSB cashback might not be an additional 5% to you, however, if you would have used a different cashback card in those shops anyway. Still, 5% is a lot better than the usual 1% or 2%.

I've just had an e-mail about this cashback, and a monthly regular saver a/c @ 5%, same as hsbc et.al.Is this new,5% regular saver, or have I missed it on here?

You missed it; mine's been open 3 months. It runs on the same lines as the Club Lloyds one, allowing you to withdraw cash early without closing the account and losing interest, so is more flexible than the HSMC/FD/M&S RSs.

Have you got more information about the HSBC et al 5% regular saver please?

I suspect Joe was referring to their 6% RS.

    3. the amount of transaction is limited to around £20 on contactless.

It went up to £30 last week - and that rise is the reason TSB timed their contactless cashback promotion to start last week.

Some card readers may not have been updated yet though.

    Thanks you might be right
    I have also seen

It confirms, you can not ask for cashback in the stores using contactless.

I haven't tried but am under the impression that anything to do with cash will require the pin. Smile excludes cashback from contactless in their FAQ:

I just ask the CS over the phone. She confirms that we do not need to do anything to activate the cashback.

All we need to do is to do is to start purchasing using, contactless debitcard

I am aware that something the information from CS could be wrong. Could anyone else who knows this please confirm it ??

    thanks

What are you aware of "that the info you got from TSB CS could be wrong"?

Are you perhaps thinking of activating the contactless mode of your card? This has nothing to do with the 5% cashback offer, as to use any debit or credit card in contactless mode, you will have had to use it at least once in a traditional chip & PIN purchase.

Buy a packet of chewing gum, a chocolate bar, a cup of coffee, a newspaper, a pair of socks etc etc and pay with your TSB debit card with the traditional chip and PIN. From thereon, your card (if it is a contactless one) will be enabled for contactless payments. But when attempting contactless payments, you might still be asked from time to time, totally randomly, to use chip and PIN.

I agree, from personal experience, with the TSB CS person that there is nothing you need to do to activate the 5% cashback offer.

Will using a card to withdraw cash at an ATM also count as a use to enable contactless payments?

Agree, it seems you have to make an actual purchase to activate the contactless payment functionality of a contactless card. As I indicated before, it can be a very small purchase.
  • My first contactless transaction didn't ask for a PIN. Only thing I'd done previously (that I can recall) was change the PIN at a cashpoint.

I don't know whether a cash withdrawal, using your PIN, would be sufficient to validate your card for future contactless payments, but I do know that changing my PIN at an ATM did not enable my card for a contactless grocery shop a few minutes later.

I presented my card to the reader at a Morrisons self service checkout and it told me to "Insert or swipe card."

Edit: I hadn't seen the post above from AlwaysLearnin when I wrote the above post.
Not intending to contradict, but we each had a different experience.
