Fraudulant activity on my bank account

  • Guess what just another person scammed of £918 via travel money Camberley also O2 phone top up and Yahoo charges - bank not too bothered will arrange money back but not really the point - i want to know where this happened as we use this particular card very rarely only at the local cash and carry - phoned police - will look into it but with this amount of activity surely the banks should be declining these transactions or why aren,t large amounts verified by the bank - ours being TSB Lloyds my Halifax account phone with anything unusual. Also lots of little amounts for 40p etc
Hopefully these will get found but expect all this will be lost in the Fraud system and continue to affect innocent people
  • I am surprised to find such a topic, lasting since July. The reason is simple - my money went away exatctly same way! On 24th September two transactions were made using my VISA credit card data or even using a fake card (in accordance with my internet bank data) – a minor one of 5 GBP amount for Manchester City Council payment (seems being thetest) and a huge one – 1003,37 GBP cash withdrawal at Camberley Travelex Currency Services. I’m a citizen of Latvia and at that time (as well as now) was here in Riga, Latvia, having this my credit card with me and even briefly before these suspicious transactions made with it a PIN accepted purchase here (the transactions in UK were made without PIN acceptance). After being noticed of these suspicious transactions I informed my bank and stopped the card. Nevertheless on 26th September were several (fortunately unsuccessful) attempts to act with my card, and one of them once again at Camberley Travelex Currency Services (withdrawal of 803,95 GBP). Now it seems to me, that both banks' and police activities are not effective enough.

  • Now I read more detailed this discussion, my feelings are exactly the same. But it seems to me, I'm the only from abroad here, but this do not preclude, that someone out of UK became a victim of Camberley Currency Services transactions. It really neither seems that nor bank, nor police efforts are sufficient or at least successful. And of course, like some others, I'm now looking more sceptics to my bank cards. The most common advice of banks is to be more careful with card, but if I exclude all such things like hotel reservations (and presenting a card as guarantee at arrival to hotel), air ticket reservations and some Internet shopping, I find that I don't need the credit card! But in reality otherwise these procedures become more difficult. Next week I have a business trip to Poland, and because my card is not replaced yet, I'm carrying a lot of Polish money in cash with me (to pay for hotel). Card is more convenient. But, of course, I'm wondering why some easy security measures are not applied - like a code table on the back of card as someone mentioned before. Or - as far as I was noticed immediately about transaction to my mobile phone by SMS, why not to introduce SMS-confirmation?! In this case for fraud the thieves must have my mobile phone also. Or - to keep the card blocked all the time, and to open it for some time sufficient for transaction by sending SMS or calling the bank. Now some banks (my - not yet) are providing "Verified by Visa" (and similar for Master Card) system, but it work only if bank provides this, the Internet shop uses it and if You choose to use it for Your card. This may prevent You from e-shopping in suspicious places, but not the thief from using your card data somewhere else, because this system is just voluntary. The same I can say about using chip cards and PIN authorisation - so far it is not mandatory requirement, I guess usage of cards are not much more safe when only magnetic strip + signature were used, because latter case is still a norm in many places.
  • I googled Travel Money Camberley and got this site.

checked my statement last night, and almost £1,500 has gone from my account in 4 transactions, 3 to Travel Money Camberley and one on a mobile phone top up at tesco. Lloyds TSB fraud department have advised me that i will get the money back within 6 days, and the forms will arrive within 10 days. I need to sign them and send them back immediately, otherwise they will take the money back out of my account. card has been cancelled. I am off on holiday the day after tomorrow, and will not have a card!! this means i will have to take cash, something i would rather not do, but I don't have a pin for my credit card...

any advice please? I can't believe that my bank didn't pick up on this unusual activity in my account - 3 transactions ranging from £300 to £700 and all at Travel Money Camberley, whom i have never dealt with before! (i can forgive them for not spotting the £30 mobile phone top up at tesco). apparently the bank have other ongoing queries at the same place - surely something should have flagged up these debits from my account? I have been awake since 3am this morning worrying about it: will i definitely get my money back? if so many others are losing their hard-earned money to Travel Money Camberley, why do Lloyds TSB not check each transaction there? And i must say that most of the people posting here seem to bank with Lloyds (although probably not for much longer). Having read some of the other posts, i think i will be at my local branch later today to fill out the necessary forms rather than waiting for them to arrive in the post.

looking at some of these other posts it looks like i am lucky i "only" lost £1,500! The fraud dept of Lloyds TSB have said there is no need for me to call the police, but quite frankly i would like to. Feel as though my family's annual holiday has been ruined - i know that sounds dramatic, but i will now spend the week worrying about money rather than relaxing.
    any advice gratefully received.

I can't believe this is happening - I've read through this thread and I don't understand how money is being withdrawn from your accounts without the proper checks. I do hope they manage to sort it out and that you are all fully reimbursed.

On an aside, and apologies if this is OT, I had my debit card stopped by my bank without my knowledge - this caused a little embarrassment as I had to find an alternative way to pay. Good job I had some cash!

I phoned them and the explanation they gave was that it had been fraudulently used. It didn't occur to them to contact me to let me know that they had blocked my card. And besides, if the card had been stopped, why could I use it to withdraw cash at the cashpoint immediately after it had been declined

I'm a bit obsessive about checking through my statements (check them at least every other day - I'm with Smile) as we're on a tight budget and I like to make sure it's all going smoothly. So to be told there was fraudulent activity on my account was a bit of a surprise as I haven't noticed any yet!

  • When I found Surrey police website, I noticed them about my problems. Yesterday they answer me and requested some details. I suppose, everyone, whose money was lost through Camberley Currency Services should notice Surrey police - let they see how many people are victims of this fraud.
  • well, I spoke to the LTSB fraud dept again this morning, and was advised the my money will definitely be returned to me within 6 working days. The forms will be sent out after the money is returned, i need to sign them and send them back.
apparently the fraudulent transactions were done over the telephone and internet. I have regularly used the internet for purchases, but only from "respectable" sites such as Amazon, and have never had a problem before. however, recently i made a telephone payment for a LTSB credit card that i had stupidly neglected to pay. given that the majority of the people posting here have had money taken from LTSB accounts, maybe it could be an inside job? a member of the call centre staff perhaps?
apparently there is no point in me reporting this to the police as they will only take up cases they feel they have a realistic chance of taking to court. Glad i haven't been burgled then!
So, i am pleased to report that mmy money should be back, but I will never make a telephone payment again!
  • I cannot believe it, I checked my online bank page yesterday and to my surprise there were two transactions showing Travel Money Camberley, one for £600 and one for £400 and two cash advance charges, hysterically I cancelled my credit card and am awaiting the declaration forms from them. I'm just so worried that I won't get my money back, I can totally prove I wasn't it Camberley or even anywhere near the place so how can I of done it. I'm very worried.....!! Also, cannot believe that Nationwide did not notice, I'm quite disgusted.

Exactly the same here. " TRVL MONEY CAMBERLE " Started just before I went on Holiday.

You didnt use APH or Thomson did you ?

No, it was my parents who paid - with cash (it was a B&B that we stayed at near the New Forest in the UK).

So although the fraud to my card clearly had no direct link with my holiday, it still seems strange that it happened while I was on away (maybe the person knew I wasn't going to be home that week??). Kinda makes me wonder...

Anyways, I'm just glad I got the money back now and I can get back to normality again, lol.
