  • And the latest today...

Just received a letter from my bank because one of my direct debits has taken my account over the agreed overdraft limit so they are charging me £30 for their trouble.

They go on to say any futher DD's will incurr the same cost until I transfer other funds into my account to reduce the overdraft.
  • I feel really sorry for you jds101, thats alot of money when your 17! and i'd tell the bank to reverse those charges The.Real.Me. It's not your fault so you shouldn't have to pay it. i had to transfer money to my current account to cover mine or i would have had the same problem.
  • Well I have to say a big thanks for this site today! I've had over £1400 taken from my account last Thursday by these people. I've called my bank who have now frozen my accounts and have asked me to go into a branch tomorrow to get the ball rolling on the investigation.

I'm still a little confused about who should be informing the police. Me or my bank? Also, can anyone tell me how long it takes for the funds to be put back?

The Fraud department told me that they would report it to the Police 'if they thought it was neccessary' I reported it anyway as did most people who had the same done to them.

I was also told that the cash would be credited back into my account in 7-10 working days providing they couldn't proove I had done anything dishonest.

    Good luck

Just thought I would join in - can't believe this is so widespread.

My bf has had his account cleared over the weekend, he's almost up to his overdraft limit. £600 overdrawn now. We noticed £300 missing on Saturday using internet banking, but only rang up up on Sunday when another £300 went missing. They said they couldn't see what it was as it's pending. It's only today that it's shown what it is.

It says "Cash Bank Central A/1236 Gajah Jakarta," so someone in India is using his account.

He's on his way to the bank now, so hopefully it will be sorted.

It's really frustrating reading this thread when you know an awful lot more could be done to deter card fraud while making cards safer to carry than cash.

The good news is that most of the victims will have the money they lost re-imbursed, but not ALL.

Even if you have your money reimbursed, card fraud costs. I'm sure some readers will have experienced calling cards fraud departments, sometimes on an 0870 and waiting ages to get through. Even worse and more expensive if your abroad. You may have to call or write to those you have direct debits, continuous credit etc with. It costs you!

An awful lot of fraud his commited by acquiring peoples PINs:

Warning Over Purse Snatchers - Swindon.

Card Thief Overheard PIN - Aberdare.

PIN Number Thief Targets Women - Great Yarmouth.

Bogus Officer Obtains PIN Numbers - Worcester

With a little co-operation from Card Issuers, UK card holders, could and should, be much better protected against card fraud home and abroad

It's simple to Deter most types of Card Fraud.

I you insist on using PINs for ALL your cards then try and keep them secret and check your statements.

Remember there are other options, Chip & Signature of Chip & PRINT.

    It's what's best for YOU!
  • what i dont get is chip and pin.....

why not have signature AND chip and pin? yes i know its more 'hassle' but for the sake of 5 seconds...

It still lets the crooks hit ATMs with stolen or cloned cards and valid PINs.

Hence why it makes more sense to use Chip & Signature or PRINT CREDIT CARDS.
