  • I dont like Chip and Pin.

When you had to sign it was easy to check the signature on the card with the slip, now how to do I know if it is really Mr or Mrs Whoever that is punching their pin number in?

I know I've used my mums card before (with her permission of course) but if we had to sign then there is no way I could of used it, unless I'm very good at forging her signature?

I know a few years ago some banks started introducing photos on credit/debit cards - whatever happened to this, I've not seen any in a long time?

I've wasted a whole day chasing a fraudulent purchase using a credit card I had never used online, that lives in my wallet at all times, and that I have not used at all for at least 3 months as the interest free period had run out.

The payment was made using Worldpay, which means that the supplier doesn't have the card number, so you have to negotiate with them as well. They are reluctant to tell you which card was used (the usual 'data protection' nonsense) which is vital information to allow you to cancel it! Grrrr.

Last month I had a £50 mobile top up go out my account that wasn't me, and also noticed a 1.50 to national express, and got my card blocked, a further 5.99 went out after that called 'pre-paid card' but it sounds like I was lucky to have such a small amount, if it had been in the hundreds I would have been scuppered. I have had the money back and a letter saying the matter has been resolved.

    Q. How are these people getting the details.?

    A. With great ease.

Everytime you give your card details to A.N. Other, i.e. over the Internet, on the Phone, or by Mail - you increase the risk of someone stealing your details.

IMHO fraudsters use card details for 3 purposes:

    1. To purchases goods

    2. To purchase services i.e. download music, movies, even gambling.

    3. To transfer funds from you account into anothers (includes buying goods that don't exist).

The first is relative simple to deter. The second is all about the vendor knowing their customer. The third about the recipients (fraudster's) bank knowing their customer.

    Here are two recent examples:

  • 24 aug & 28 aug i had two amounts adding to £7500 taken by this company. Call 0845 600 6667 to speak to them. These transactions alledgedly come from the travelex office in camberly. My bank LloydsTSB have been OK about it and have told me i will be refunded in 5 working days
  • Ouch! thats alot! I think photos on cards would be good but it won't help unless your in a shop. My account still looks very unhealthy but I have to wait for the bank to sort it out. Uni is going to take my tuition fees out in a few days and it isn't there! not a happy bunny.
  • I don't know whether to be alarmed or reassured that this is happening to other people too...

I'm currently disputing two charges on my debit card for £305.56 each that I noticed on my statement today. The description says "GOOGLE*EBUYER", which I've never even heard of before, let alone purchased £600+ worth of goods from. The debit card was with me all the time, and nobody else knows my PIN.

I went to HSBC today to report it and they've started a fraud investigation. They seem optimistic that I will get my money back but they give me any indication of how long this will take. They've also cancelled my debit card.

Since I was in debit to start with, losing £600+ puts me right at my overdraft limit and unable to pay rent, bills, etc. As a broke student I couldn't afford to lose £6, let alone £600. HSBC has increased my overdraft so that I can at least pay this month's rent, but I'm worried about being so far overdrawn, particularly as I'm likely to incur fees for it.

It's very stressful and upsetting. I hope that everybody who had money taken from their accounts gets it back ASAP.
