Ouch. I had hoped that my kids would get cheaper as they got older but it doesn't look as though they're going to go that way.

I guess it depends on the child. DS1 has always managed his money well and still has money from his 18th birthday when we gave him the money we had been saving for him since he was a baby. Only £10 a month which we put into a plan for him. He is now 22.
DS2 had spent his within 6 months and really struggles to manage his money despite my best efforts. In May he had spent all of his student loan as he was sort of promised a job which didn't happen and he has only managed to get work in the last few weeks. I was worried about him as he said that he felt depressed about the whole thing and that he knows how much he had messed up money wise. It upset me to hear my 19 year old son talk like that when usually he is a ray of sunshine.
It has been a real struggle but we have been fortunate enough to be able to pay his rent and give him something to live on for the last 3 months."These things take time but I know that I'm the most inept that ever stepped"0 -

Yep, all our savings and then some but thankfully the end is in sight.
We have always given him a small amount of money weekly £20 as our contribution to his living expenses, however OH thinks that once his student loan is through (he will also get some maintenance grant and last year he got £1000 bursary). and seeing as though he is working over 20 hours a week that we should stop doing this. His argument is that he has had the £20's all at once by us paying his rent.
I know it's the right thing to do but I still feel guilty at the thought."These things take time but I know that I'm the most inept that ever stepped"0 -
I have been totally lost this morning until the site started working again:eek:
Off to move DS2 in a bit and have had quite a productive morning so far.
Got all the ironing done and put away which makes me feel so much more in control.
Listed 3 more items on Ebay.
Made a hairdressers appointment for next Saturday with my old (and significantly cheaper) hairdresser. Fingers crossed she does a good job this time.
Just talked ourselves out of eating in town tonight as OH is still a little delicate from last night in the pub:rotfl: He says that he fancies a take away later which will be much cheaper than eating in a restaurant. I have already planned my own fakeaway from stores which is healthier too.
PA surveys are steady away and balance is over £12 now
Did the food shopping for the week £42 and filled up with fuel in my car for hopefully the month £50. I am really trying hard not to go far with the cars as I am trying to cut down in every area.
Hope everyone is having a great weekend so far.:)"These things take time but I know that I'm the most inept that ever stepped"0 -
Sounding very organised Madam
Mum used to send me some money, which I used to try to send back! I suppose I was always aware that my sister, even then had money issues and that it was entirely my choice to go to uni (first person ever in my family to go) and I never wanted them to worry about me and money - so ermm yeah.....got myself in to a pile of debtand the rest is history. it was so hard to be so young and not really have a clue. You are good parents

Thanks Buffy :A
I know that he has a £1500 overdraft which is always at the max but I am pretty certain that the does't have credit cards or other loans.
Move was quite smooth and as he had been to work all day I treat him to a chippy tea and OH joined in too. Is £3.80 for kebab meat (gak) and chips expensive because I think it is!
£7.60 spent on Takeaways, £1.60 toll charge and £28 on groceries as it was highly apparent that he didn't have a thing to make a meal out of when we emptied his fridge and cupboardsI also have a feeling that his student finance will not come through before his next rent payment on the 28th so will have to keep some money back for that. I will, however be taking this straight out of his loan once it comes through.
We have come to an agreement. When his loan and grant comes in he is going to transfer the whole lot into my account. We will work out how much is needed for rent and other bills (the house has a monthly bills account which I feel is sensible) and then we can calculate how much of a weekly budget he has. I will be setting a standing order for this amount weekly so that he can properly budget. He will also have his wages.
This may seem over the top and control freaky but I am scared that he does not have the capacity to budget when a large amount hits his account. He agrees that it will help him learn to manage his money."These things take time but I know that I'm the most inept that ever stepped"0 -
Sunday goals.
At a Christening today which should be lovely. It is a joint one of 2 children (twins) so I had no idea what to buy as a gift and as I don't really know the family very well as it is one of OH old work colleagues I have decided to give them money. They are both older children (don't even know how old but on FB they look about 8) Got a card and have put 2 x £10 notes.
Might need a few quid for a pint for OH but I shall stick to water. Apart from that no other spends on the cards. Here are my goals for today:
HEALTH
Eat as healthily as possible and stay within my WW points
Get out for a walk later in the day
Drink water instead of alcohol at Christening
Cook something healthy for dinner from stores
WEALTH
Find some more things to list on £bay
Check Surveys
Check free lotto
Update budget spreadsheet (have put spends in since payday)
Play free bingo
HAPPINESS
Enjoy Christening, put on a nice dress, paint nails, do hair etc
Visit Mum
Do not even think about work today
Catch up on housework
Sunday evening is traditionally our meal out night as lots of restaurants have Sunday night specials. As we will be eating at the Christening we will not be doing this which means that this has been the first weekend in AS LONG AS I REMEMBER when we have not eaten out. Let's just hope OH doesn't notice!"These things take time but I know that I'm the most inept that ever stepped"0 -
That is what I sort of did for myself at that point, I had one account with the rent money in and my rent came out of there and then my current account was my spending money ( as were two credit cards!)
I like the health wealth and happiness thing. Enjoy the ChristeningXX

I think it's a good idea teaching your son to budget that way. My DS is only 6 but I can already see a 'buy now pay later' attitude in him that I intend to get rid of.Not giving up
