    Really ?

I wouldn't date anyone who judged me on my ability to drive or not.
Car owning (which I guess is what you mean really) is way down my list of priorities when choosing a date. On the other hand I've dated men who lived in central London -and they wouldn't dream of owning a car as a car in London is a PITA only taxi drivers and tourists drive in central London ;)

I suppose if I lived somewhere really rural it might be important but not otherwise.

Yes it would be different if public transport was so good that driving was irrelevant. But here driving is important and I think it's a life skill.

If someone hadn't bothered learning to drive (here) I'd think they lacked ambition or follow through. Plus no one wanted to be getting lifts from their parents to sixth form parties, so not cool ;)

For me it would be indicative of a partner personality type in which I have no interest.

How can non driving be a " personality type"?

Like you say Duchy, it depends on where the persons live, within London, yes it semi doesn't make sense to have a car.
Outside of the smoke though.... things can be different.
I guess age can come into it too, I learned to drive as soon as possible as did a lot of males my age, the females obtained their licenses in their 20s.

Anyways it's not a matter of judging people, it will vary from person to person, along with other practices like being allergic to opening their purses :rotfl:

However back in the spirit of the thread, perhaps the OP needs to return to elaborate on if they are being taken for a mug.

Sometimes it can be, my last GF although she drove, she wouldn't drive on motorways, (which irritated me) but there were other traits some could be viewed as lazy or unambitious. :o

My ex didn't drive when we first got together and he lived about 10-15 minutes away. I didn't mind as it wasn't that far and I'd often go straight from work which was local to him. He started driving and we preferred to be at his so I still used to drive to him. If it bothers you, ask for money towards fuel etc as its saving your partner money on public transport.
Now the tables have turned for me and I'm not currently driving due to medical reasons but because of how I feel about it, I won't meet anyone until I'm driving again.

This post reminds me of the girls at school who would be mightly impressed if a boy has access (to his parent's) car .
Borrowing Mummy's car was very uncool in my teenage days though -the cool kids got cabs the nerds drove "middle aged" parental cars or worse a sensible car bought for them by their parents.

My OH doesn't drive, never needed to and if he did now it would be an unnecessary drain on finances to buy and keep two vehicles, nevermind the learning process.

It did bother me slightly at first having to drive to him but we solved that by moving in together ;)

I do know people who have never driven and it has severely limited their career progress

It never bothered me taking a 230 mile trip to meet her at the train station back when I DIDN'T drive. I would have travelled anywhere to see her.

Likewise it did not bother her when she drove the 230 Mile trip to see me. I guess she thought it was worth the trip. Of course we now both drive yet live together, so it was worth it in the end for the both of us.

Living so close to a City Centre, the incentive to drive is not worth it for many.

I said indicative of a personality type.

In general, someone who has an illogical fear, and self limits their life by making themselves dependent upon others, is not the personality type I look for in a partner. YMMV.

I'm biased because I didn't learn to drive until I was 50 but it never made me dependent on anybody - you can afford a lot of taxis if you don't run a car.
