Very disappointing that the limit for purchases in shops stays at £20 for now.

This limit is not imposed by Apple, but by retailers' card readers whose software has not been upgraded to remove the £20 limit for 2-factor authenticated contactless payments. This will vary between retailers.

This isn't Apple's fault its the limit that's already set for contactless payments here in the UK, its due to go up to £30 in September.
Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.

Did I say it was Apple's fault, or that Apple imposed a limit?

    No, I didn't.

All I said is that it is very disappointing that the limit for purchases in shops stays at £20 for now.

No, we didn't suggest that you said that. We were both clarifying how it works after you drew attention to the limit. Don't worry; nobody is contradicting or criticising your helpful comment.

The limits only going to be there until September for most terminals. Most terminals providers will update their terminals to support on device verification (I.e. transactions of any value) along with updating them to the £30 limit. I know for a fact First Data (Lloyds Bank merchant services), Global payments and WorldPay are doing this.

So will £30 be the max for ApplePay in the autumn? Everywhere, or just in shops? Some shops? All shops?

Most places won't have a limit for Apple pay (or any other mobile payment device) from Autumn.

There is one area that I can see Apple Pay working well but it would need a fair bit of software updating. Currently I have an Oyster season ticket but now that I have contactless cards I have to physically remove it from my wallet to get through the barrier. If I could add it to Apple Pay and the phone could recognise that the signal is a tfl terminal then it should present my season ticket by default.

There'd be no financial inducement for Apple to do this as such but it would encourage me to switch the the phone. There are almost certainly too many hurdles to jump, though, so I don't expect to see it happen. As far as I can tell, the card itself holds data and is loaded at the terminal. Also, would it be able to stop someone copying the Oyster onto their phone and giving the actual ticket to someone else?

Perhaps one day but not in the immediate future.

If you buy weekly Oyster season tickets, then you will be able to do this already by paying with a contactless payment card, given that contactless payments on TfL are capped each week at the price of a weekly season ticket. It would be fantastic if TfL extended this system to work with monthly caps.

This would require Apple to open up the iPhone's NFC chip to third parties. Nobody knows if or when they will do this. I do agree with you that it would be very useful. Also it would be fantastic for workplace security passes. Employers would like it because it would add two-factor authentication to security passes.
