"Tesco said it had no plans to formally adopt the system, although the technology will work in some of its stores in London which already have contactless payment facilities in place" - This has been found to be true in the US as well. Apple Pay users have found that even where a retailer doesn't officially accept Apple Pay, they can use it in many cases. However, this isn't true at Walmart, so don't expect it to work at Asda either. Maybe this is how US-based users have already been able to use Apple Pay on Transport for London.

Yes, I understand that, but no Tesco anywhere near me has contactless anyway. An unwillingness to generally adopt the system would also suggest they wouldn't do whatever it is they need to do the lift the contactless transaction limit even if they are forced to accept some Apple pay transactions.

I guess like anything time will tell.

One of the Tesco metros near me in East Anglia just got updated, so its possible they are finally updating all their terminals.

Waitrose and M&S are signed up. Not sure why Tesco and Asda don't want to be part of it because it is hard to see why anyone wouldn't want to make things easier for their customers.

Asda is owned by Walmart, who are backing a rival system called CurrentC. This article explains more.

Well yes but it still makes no sense , and certainly not for Tesco. They are just hurting themselves if they don't accept mainstream payment methods. It's a huge gamble to bank on Apple Pay not being a mainstream payment method in the very near future. Even dinosaurs like myself can't wait for Apple Pay to arrive in the UK!

A sizeable minority of retailers take the same approach with cards issued by American Express, which has become one of the largest card issuers in the UK. For example, B&Q used to accept Amex, but stopped doing so, and it still gets customers.

Funny you should mention B&Q and Amex. One of the reasons, in fact the 'straw that broke the camel's back' one, I have stopped going to B&Q is that they don't take Amex. They can't even lure me with their Wednesday over 60s 10% now.

I appreciate the retailers will have churned their numbers and concluded they will not lose by not taking Apple Pay. I just think they are wrong as I believe Apple Pay will be a juggernaut like VHS and Windows were in their time.

Let's meet up in 10 years time, or even just in 5, and see whether I was right. In the meantime, I won't be shopping at Tesco or Asda if I can't pay with Apple Pay (even though I hate the name -- - why didn't they call it iPay, as it is me that pays!!!)

Indeed. For the same reason, I go first to Homebase and only go to B&Q if I can't find what I need at Homebase. I want my Avios for spending on Amex!

They are moving away from the i prefix. In this case it would work quite well though like you say!
