I'm curious to know how Apple Pay will work with Transport for London. Following is the current situation:
    1. Anyone can use a contactless payment card (debit or credit card) on the yellow card readers at the beginning and end of each journey. TfL's system calculates the fares for multiple journeys and then charges the payment card at the end of the day. Fares are subject to daily and weekly caps, so it's never more expensive than buying a daily or weekly Travelcard. Passengers can optionally register their payment card numbers on TfL's web site and see detailed journey histories.
    2. Apple Pay users (currently possible only with a US credit card on an iPhone with the region set to the United States) are already using Apple Pay on TfL according to the Daily Telegraph.
One thing we already know about Apple Pay is that it doesn't give the payment card number to the payee. Therefore TfL won't know the passenger's payment card number. Therefore how do Apple Pay users (including existing US-based users) register to see their detailed journey history on TfL's web site? TfL mentions a "Device Account Number", but it's not currently possible to enter this on the TfL web site, only a valid payment card number. Seeing one's journey history is essential, particularly if touching in or out at the beginning or end of a journey fails, which is a frequent problem. If a touch-in or touch-out fails to register, then the passenger is heavily surcharged for an unresolved journey and needs to claim a refund online.

I have a US-issued American Express card, which I've successfully added to my iPhone 6 for Apple Pay. It shows my Device Account Number, but only the last 5 digits are visible. Therefore even if TfL adds the functionality to add a Device Account Number to one's online account, how will the user know what it is? How do existing Apple Pay users on TfL handle unresolved journeys?

Does anyone know if you need to have a contactless card to set it up with? I'm wondering I'll be able to use my nationwide credit card.
No, it doesn't need to be contactless. I've already added my US-issued American Express card to Apple Pay on my iPhone 6, and this card isn't contactless. First my iPhone's camera read the details from the card, and then I received an SMS containing a 6-digit code that I needed to enter into my iPhone to confirm that it was my card. Amazingly my iPhone now lists my recent transactions on my Amex card, none of which were via Apple Pay. This demonstrates close integration between Apple and card issuers, at least with Amex US.

Today I've tried to add several credit cards issued by participating UK card issuers, but even though my iPhone recognises them as UK-issued cards and displays Apple Pay's UK-specific T&Cs, the registration fails and it tells me to contact the card issuer.

Seems you have to have an iPhone 5 or 6 to play though?

You need an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, unless you have an Apple Watch with a 5, 5S or 5C.

It needs the secure enclave to store the card details which only the newer devices have, it also needs NFC for in store payments which again is only included in the most recent models.

No, it is Apple who is introducing the service in July. There are a number of participating card issuers, of which NatWest/RBS is one.

We already know that. It was stated clearly in the very first post at the top of this thread.

OK, fine. Lloyds will be late to the party, but RBS will be in July as it said above in the first post.

Barclays is the one that stands out by its absence. Reports suggest that Barclays doesn't want to participate in a service that competes with its Pingit service. However, Apple Pay and Barclays Pingit are two totally different services. Whereas Apple Pay is primarily aimed at retail point-of-sale transactions, Barclays Pingit is primarily aimed at bank-to-bank transfers between mobile phone numbers. The types of payees are very different. I don't see any competition between these two services.
